Tsinghua's Academy of Arts & Design Launches 2025 Postgraduate Exhibition

On May 23, 2025, the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University (AADTHU) inaugurated its 2025 Postgraduate Exhibition at the university's prominent art museum. This remarkable showcase features an impressive collection comprising works from over 170 graduating students, marking a significant milestone for the institution.

A Platform for Innovation and Dialogue

The exhibition spans nine galleries and four stories, running until June 1 and open to the public, making it the first time AADTHU has displayed its entire graduate collection in a nationally recognized museum. This strategic move aims to enhance accessibility and engagement with the broader audience, effectively bridging the gap between art and everyday life.

During the opening ceremony, Dean Ma Sai commended the graduates for their thoughtful integration of traditional wisdom with modern artistic expressions. He highlighted how these creations engage with contemporary social issues, embodying the academy's dedication to synthesizing Eastern and Western art philosophies and uniting art with technology. Encouraging students to stay grounded in humanistic values, he emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from Chinese cultural aesthetics to navigate the challenges ahead.

Qin Chuan, Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) AADTHU Committee, underscored the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on artistic boundaries. He reaffirmed AADTHU's commitment to merging art and technology, advocating for creativity firmly rooted in real-world issues and aligned with Tsinghua University's ethos of patriotism and excellence.

Lu Xiaobo, the museum director, commented on the groundbreaking hosting of the entire graduate showcase at a national-level museum, highlighting the innovation in combining educational achievements with public cultural platforms. He stressed the importance of public engagement, as graduates convey their learning while demonstrating the pivotal role of art education in cultural evolution.

Diverse Exhibits Reflecting Social Consciousness

The exhibition features diverse works, including product design, spatial design, digital art, and visual storytelling. Each project reflects the students' keen awareness of societal issues and their connections to everyday life. Themes such as aging and adolescent mental health are prevalent, illustrating a shared commitment to using artistic creativity to address pressing contemporary challenges.

The academy's commitment to cultural continuity is a defining characteristic of the exhibition. Students reinterpret traditional heritage through innovative digital techniques, infusing classic elements like Dunhuang motifs and heritage crafts into modern aesthetics. Some projects explore futuristic environments, employing advanced technology to venture into new realms where art and innovation intersect.

Interactive zones within the exhibition allow visitors to engage firsthand with the melding of contemporary art and technology, fostering a dynamic dialogue about artistic expressions in today's world. The interaction represents a bold step in making art more relevant to the public while enriching the dialogue around cultural development.

A Vision for the Future

In a motivating address, faculty member Chen Lei urged students to wield their curiosity and integrity as they navigate the rapidly evolving artistic landscape.
