National Reading League Summit 2026: Revolutionizing Literacy Education
The Reading League (TRL), a national nonprofit organization renowned for its commitment to evidence-based reading instruction, is gearing up to host its much-anticipated Summit on May 5-6, 2026. This event will be held at The Oncenter in Syracuse, New York, and will focus on empowering educators from across the United States to effectively interpret and utilize literacy data to enhance student outcomes.
The theme for this year’s Summit, "From Confusion to Clarity: Turning Data Into Instructional Impact," highlights one of the most significant challenges facing literacy education today. With the vast array of assessments available, understanding their true purpose and translating results into actionable instructional strategies is paramount.
Dr. Maria Murray, the president and CEO of The Reading League, encapsulated this sentiment: "Assessment should empower educators, not overwhelm them. When we understand what data truly tell us about student learning, we can make decisions that accelerate progress. This Summit is designed to ensure educators leave with clarity, confidence, and the tools to act."
Keynote Speaker and Sessions
One of the standout features of this year’s Summit is the keynote presentation by Dr. Christopher Schatschneider, the associate director of the Florida Center for Reading Research. Dr. Schatschneider will delve into the evolution of reading assessments, shedding light on what makes an assessment valid, reliable, and genuinely useful for instruction. He emphasized, "Screening, progress monitoring, diagnostic assessment, and the science of reading itself all rely on measurement and assessment! It is the foundation of all that we do."
In addition to the keynote, this Summit introduces a new format featuring hands-on, interactive data workshops. Led by experts Adrea Truckenmiller and Anita Archer, these workshops will engage participants with real K-5 decoding and language comprehension data. This practical application will enable educators to uncover what these metrics reveal about student learning and identify specific instructional steps to take next.
The workshops promise to equip attendees with:
- - A deeper understanding of literacy assessment tools
- - Practical strategies for selecting and interpreting these tools
- - Clear connections between assessment results and instructional planning
- - A shared framework that teams can implement immediately
