Empowering Communities: Women Build Event Aims to Address Housing Crisis

The South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity is gearing up for its much-anticipated Women Build event, set to take place from May 6–9 and 13–16, 2026. This initiative, supported by local sponsors like Peak Credit Union, aims to tackle the pressing issue of affordable housing in the region. With the involvement of volunteers, this event promises to both build homes for deserving families and raise funds to advance the mission of Habitat for Humanity. Over the course of the event, four teams made up of 32 volunteers will work diligently each day to provide shelter to those in need.

Why is Women Build Important?

In today's challenging housing market, homeownership seems out of reach for many. Statistics from the 2022 census reveal a stark contrast in homeownership rates: only 34% of single mothers own homes compared to 79% of married couples. Moreover, single-parent households face significant financial hurdles, with their average net worth trailing far behind that of the general population—$10,700 for single moms versus $176,300 for all households.

Affordable housing initiatives, like the ones spearheaded by South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity, offer vital support to local families, helping them break free from the cycle of financial stress. Research conducted by various Habitat for Humanity chapters show significant benefits for homeowners:
  • - 65% experience improved physical health
  • - 80% see better academic performance among their children
  • - 57% manage to save more money

A Community of Changemakers

Elizabeth Walker, CEO of South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity, highlights the event's community-driven spirit. "Women Build is an amazing event that brings inspired women together from across the community. Last year, we raised over $100,000 to support affordable homeownership, and we're optimistic about raising even more funds this year with our experienced volunteer fundraisers."

In preparation for this year’s event, teams of eight women are actively fundraising within their networks, aiming to contribute to a total of over $85,000. Local businesses, especially Premier Sponsor Peak Credit Union, are stepping forward to play a significant role, not only through sponsorship but also by mobilizing volunteers and providing meals for participants.

Dr. David Tuyo, CEO of Peak Credit Union, shares his belief in the fundamental right to safe, affordable housing. "Access to safe, affordable housing is fundamental to financial well-being. Together, we can build real pathways to stability for families, and we’re proud to support initiatives like Women Build that make a significant impact in our communities."

Hands-On Building Experience

During the event, women builders will undertake the crucial task of framing and raising walls for homes in the Tâlíčn development located in Tumwater. The build will continue on May 16 with a day dedicated to constructing homes at the new Mill Crossing development in Yelm.

As the South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity expands its efforts to meet the increasing demand for affordable housing, there are more volunteer opportunities than ever—and they are available year-round. The organization warmly invites individuals to contribute at various levels, whether it’s supporting construction projects, working in donation-driven stores, or helping at their office locations in Yelm and Olympia. A Commitment to Hope and Shelter

Since its inception in 1989, South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity has been dedicated to building homes and fostering a sense of hope in Thurston County. In the coming four years, the organization plans to construct 148 new homes across the region as part of its ongoing commitment to affordable housing. Their programs range from promoting homeownership and repair to providing community education efforts.

The Tâlíčn development features 28 homes that have already attracted 14 households, offering three- and four-bedroom options with energy-efficient amenities. Similarly, the upcoming Mill Crossing and Boulevard developments are designed with community engagement and sustainability in mind, fostering family-oriented neighborhoods with easy access to essential services and nature.
