Urielle’s Journey to Empowerment

In a small classroom tucked away in Bangui, Central African Republic, we find Urielle, a determined 20-year-old navigating life with vision impairments. Her fingers trace the raised dots of braille on a page, a skill she learned at a UNICEF-supported Training Centre dedicated to children like her. Despite losing her eyesight at the tender age of three, Urielle has never allowed her disability to define her.

"I lost my eyesight at three, but my parents instilled in me the values of independence and resilience from an early age," she shares with a bright smile. This unwavering familial support and her passion for learning have shaped her aspirations, allowing her to envision a successful future.

The UNICEF-supported Training Centre in Bangui stands as a beacon of hope for children with vision impairments. It is one of several such centres funded by Education Cannot Wait (ECW), aimed at transforming educational opportunities for girls and boys with visual challenges. Through dedicated braille literacy programs, the Centre empowers students to build essential skills that prepare them for mainstream education and independent living.

Each day, a specially equipped tuk-tuk transports Urielle to her educational haven, where instructors, some of whom share her disability, utilize innovative teaching strategies to enhance learning experiences. The curriculum aligns with the national educational standards, equipping students with the knowledge they need to thrive academically and socially.

"When I learned how to read and write in braille, that was a turning point for me," says Urielle, her eyes shining with enthusiasm. Her passion for storytelling has blossomed; she finds joy in sharing narratives about social issues that touch lives worldwide. "Social science is my favorite subject. Understanding how different cultures navigate their challenges inspires me to think critically about the world," she expresses.

However, her path has not been without obstacles. In a society where stigma surrounding disabilities still exists, Urielle has encountered discouragement from others. "There were times when neighbors would belittle me, telling me I should focus on household chores instead of education. But with my parents’ unwavering support, I was able to rise above those negative voices," she recounts.

Urielle emphasizes the importance of education in shaping her identity and future. "Every piece of knowledge I acquire opens new stories and possibilities in my mind. I am driven to become a journalist to share these stories and inspire others," she declares with determination.

Beyond academics, the Centre recognizes the importance of vocational training, providing students with essential skills for future employment. Past graduates have successfully secured jobs and integrated into society, demonstrating the potential that education holds for individuals with disabilities.

The Central African Republic faces many challenges—conflict, instability, and limited infrastructure severely restrict access to education, especially for children with disabilities. Stigma often leads families to isolate children with special needs from their communities, further hampering their opportunities. Yet, Urielle's parents recognized the untapped potential within her and committed to nurturing her dreams.

As ECW continues to support educational initiatives in the region, Urielle remains hopeful for the future. "I dream of becoming a Paralympic athlete alongside being a journalist. I train in long-distance running three times a week," she says, her passion reflecting her relentless spirit.
