Grand Opening of the Community Health Center in Uvalde
On July 28, 2025, a significant milestone was reached for the Uvalde community with the grand opening of a new multi-purpose community health center, backed by Superior HealthPlan and the Centene Foundation. Located at 115 N. Ham Lane, this 16,000-square-foot facility is more than just a building; it symbolizes hope, healing, and the future of health care for the residents of Uvalde.
The center's establishment comes in a proactive response to the urgent need for comprehensive health services in the aftermath of the tragic Robb Elementary School shooting in May 2022. Recognizing the community's demand for physical, behavioral, and emotional health support, Community Health Development, Inc. (CHDI) has stepped forward to spearhead this endeavor. With annual care provided for over 12,000 local residents, CHDI aims to enhance the quality of health services available in the region.
A Commitment to Community Health
The health center, funded in part by over $8 million from the Centene Foundation and Superior HealthPlan, is designed to fill vital gaps in healthcare provision. Centene CEO Sarah M. London emphasized the center's role in improving health outcomes, stating, "This center reflects our long-standing commitment to enhancing care in Uvalde, serving nearly one in four individuals here."
The facility houses seven primary medical care examination rooms, three dental operatories, telehealth behavioral health services, a Class A pharmacy with drive-up access, and a medical laboratory. It is staffed with 20 full-time employees and includes a community room with a capacity of over 150 people, providing ample space for local events and meetings. Additional office spaces for local organizations, such as Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid and Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas, further enrich the center's offerings.
Designed with Care
The design of the center not only focuses on providing medical care but also emphasizes emotional support and community development. It includes a tranquility garden, dedicated to honoring the victims of the Robb Elementary tragedy, which underscores the center's role in the healing journey for many in Uvalde.
CEO of CHDI, Mayela Castañon, expressed pride in the progress made with this initiative. "Opening this health center was a top priority for us to help our community heal and build a stronger, healthier future," she said. Furthermore, Dr. David Diaz de Leon, supervisory medical director at Superior HealthPlan, noted that the establishment of this center resulted from collaborative efforts among many stakeholders to ensure ongoing support for students, parents, and families.
A Bright Future Ahead
As the center opens its doors, it stands as a beacon of hope and resilience for the Uvalde community, aiming to enhance health outcomes and provide essential services. Regular events hosted by local organizations will bring the community together, fostering relationships and strengthening bonds. By creating welcoming spaces for education, health, and support, this health center is poised to make a lasting impact on Uvalde’s future.
