Global Corporations Unite to Triple Nuclear Energy Capacity by 2050

Historic Commitment to Nuclear Energy

At the recent CERAWeek 2025 held in Houston, a transformative announcement was made by an impressive coalition of global enterprises that emphasizes a dedicated push towards enhancing nuclear energy capacity. This is not just a move within the nuclear sector; it reflects the unified voice of major energy consumers who recognize the crucial role nuclear energy plays in meeting the escalating global energy demands.

The coalition includes giants like Google, Amazon, Meta, and Dow, alongside 14 prominent global banks and financial institutions, as well as representatives from 140 nuclear industry firms and 31 different countries. Together, they aim to triple the world’s nuclear capacity by 2050, marking a bold and unprecedented commitment in the face of climate change and energy challenges.

The Pledge

On March 12, 2025, these industry leaders signed a pledge to bolster nuclear energy significantly. By doing so, they are sending a clear signal about their collective need for stable, clean, and abundant energy sources to fuel future growth while enhancing energy resilience and security. They invited other energy users to join this initiative, highlighting the need for a concerted effort in the nuclear sector.

This commitment, facilitated by the World Nuclear Association, illustrates the pressing demands from a variety of economic sectors – including technology, maritime, aviation, oil, and gas – to transition towards more sustainable and reliable energy sources. The sector aims to shift public perception while advocating for government support and equal access to financing for nuclear projects.

Voices from the Industry

Key figures from the companies involved have expressed their enthusiasm for this historic commitment. Lucia Tian, Google’s Clean Energy and Decarbonization Technologies Director, stated, “We are proud to sign this commitment to triple nuclear capacity by 2050, as nuclear energy will be pivotal in building a reliable, secure, and sustainable energy future.” This underlines the crucial role Google sees nuclear energy playing in its long-term energy strategies.

Amazon's Director of Energy and Water for the Americas, Brandon Oyer, added, “Accelerating nuclear energy development is vital not just for national security but also to combat climate change.” He emphasized Amazon's contribution of over a billion dollars to nuclear projects over the past year as part of its broader Climate Commitment.

Urvi Parekh, Global Energy Director for Meta, echoed similar sentiments, explaining the growing need for reliable energy sources as economies expand. “Nuclear energy, with its capacity for continuous supply, can help meet this rising demand,” she stated.

Edward Stones, Vice President of Dow Energy and Climate, emphasized the importance of clean, reliable energy in global manufacturing, specifically mentioning advanced small modular reactors as an appealing long-term solution.

Sama Bilbao y Leon, Director General of the World Nuclear Association, highlighted the unprecedented nature of this collective support.
