Heather Collins is far from a stranger to the world of volleyball. Over her impressive 30-year coaching journey, she has accumulated a wealth of experience that spans across collegiate, club, and international levels. Beginning her own volleyball journey as a student-athlete, Collins played at the NCAA Division I level for UC Santa Barbara, where she also served as team captain. After completing her collegiate career, she took her talents further, competing professionally in both indoor and beach volleyball.

Collins’ coaching career began shortly after her playing days, as she was offered an assistant coaching position that blossomed into a long and successful career dedicated to nurturing young athletes. Her journey took her to roles at prestigious institutions such as Loyola Marymount University from 1997 to 2010. Following this, she took charge as the Head Coach at Occidental College from 2011 to 2024. Her commitment to volleyball extends beyond the United States, with coaching stints in countries such as Italy, the Dominican Republic, Australia, and Costa Rica, demonstrating her global perspective on the sport.

One of the distinguishing features of Collins' coaching style is her player-centered approach. She emphasizes the importance of long-term athlete development, maintaining an environment where athletes feel accountable for their progress, and fostering an atmosphere of growth. As Collins puts it, “I’m super competitive, and I’d love to win, but the best part about coaching is witnessing a player struggle with a particular skill and seeing them make progress. The moment it clicks, and they understand the value of their hard work, is what coaching is all about.” This philosophy indicates her commitment not only to winning games but to developing well-rounded young women who are prepared for life both on and off the court.
