New Jersey Students Showcase Innovation in Mott Million Dollar Challenge Finals
The Mott Million Dollar Challenge has become a nationwide platform, providing K-12 students the opportunity to present their innovative ideas. This year, three promising students from New Jersey stood out and earned their spot as semifinalists, showcasing creativity and social responsibility.
The competition attracted over 5,300 participants from across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., with a staggering number of over 3,700 entries submitted. Out of these, 1,500 projects were shortlisted in the first phase, culminating in only 60 semifinalists, including the three New Jersey students who will compete in the final event happening from June 15 to 16 in downtown Flint, Michigan.
Meet the New Jersey Semifinalists:
1. Siya Krishna (2nd Grade, Eisenhower Elementary School) - Siya's project, the "KindLeaf Card Company," presents a unique twist on greeting cards. These cards are embedded with seeds that can grow into flowers or herbs. Not only does this creative concept help reduce paper waste, but a portion of the sales also supports local schools, blending environmental awareness with community benefit.
2. Nithya Tammana (6th Grade, Monroe Township Middle School) - Nithya’s initiative, "Save Drop," aims to combat household water waste through education. This nonprofit venture trains young individuals, dubbed 'water warriors,' to take action in conserving water. Through a gamified app, participants can track their water-saving efforts, share insights, and earn rewards as they achieve conservation milestones, fostering a culture of sustainability among peers.
3. Aditya Herekar (11th Grade, John P. Stevens High School) - Aditya’s focus is on environmental sustainability with his company, "Naturista," which creates fully dissolvable and biodegradable coffee pods. These innovative capsules address the growing concern over plastic waste while providing a healthier alternative to traditional coffee options. This project highlights the intersection of convenience and ecological responsibility, catering to coffee lovers who wish to protect the environment.
Each semifinalist will walk away with a funding boost of $5,000 to support their projects as they prepare for the final pitch event. The challenge itself, funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, is part of a series of initiatives aimed at fostering entrepreneurial spirit among the youth, making entrepreneurship education a priority for young innovators.
The Mott Million Dollar Challenge, which is administered by the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) in partnership with other organizations, emphasizes the importance of harnessing creative ideas as a means to develop essential skills for future challenges. The event not only underscores the significance of innovation in our world but also nurtures young minds to think critically and act purposefully.
