Canon MJ and FREE Launch Innovative Water Cycle Solution to Combat Water Shortages

Innovative Water Cycle Solution: A Collaborative Pilot Project

In a groundbreaking initiative, Canon Marketing Japan (Canon MJ) has partnered with FREE to tackle the critical issue of water scarcity through innovative solutions. This collaboration is geared toward creating a sustainable society resilient against disasters, utilizing air-to-water technology. Beginning in September 2025, they will conduct a pilot project in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture, focusing on the implementation of a water cycle solution that autonomously generates, utilizes, and purifies water using both rainwater and moisture from the atmosphere.

The Water Cycle Solution in Action

The core of this project revolves around the air-to-water machine, developed by FREE, known as POTORI, which captures humidity from the air, processes, filters, and sterilizes it to produce safe drinking water. Throughout the project duration, from September 2025 until March 2026, researchers will gather daily data on water quality and production quantities. This data collection aims to facilitate the practical application of water circular solutions that enable safe and comfortable living, even amid infrastructural disruptions during disasters.

In addition to providing a reliable water supply, the pilot will also incorporate solar panels and storage batteries, ensuring that the entire water cycle solution operates completely off-grid. This design aligns with the goal of reducing dependence on public utilities concerning electricity and water supply, particularly crucial during emergencies when traditional infrastructures might fail.

A Sustainable Approach to Water Management

The envisioned water cycle model addresses various use cases effectively. One of the significant applications is ensuring a potable water source during disasters. Even when traditional water supply systems are compromised, units equipped with the water cycle solution can independently supply safe drinking water, facilitating a sense of security for those in distressing circumstances.

Moreover, in regions lacking adequate water infrastructure, air-to-water machines present a practical solution, allowing communities to produce their own drinking water from available atmospheric moisture. This capability promotes self-sustainability and enhances the quality of life in areas where water access is limited or inconsistent.

In promoting sustainable water usage, the project emphasizes reusing water from daily activities. The technology enables households to purify and recycle water, thus lowering environmental impact while ensuring efficient use of this precious resource. Such innovations foster a culture of sustainability, allowing communities to thrive without over-relying on increasingly scarce water resources.

Canon MJ’s Commitment to Open Innovation

Canon MJ actively pursues open innovation as a means to address societal challenges and create value for the future. In this venture, the company will provide marketing support and contribute to devising new solutions for drinking water through the combination of air-to-water machines and recycling technologies. The overarching goal remains focused on contributing to sustainable development within society, creating pathways for a future where everyone can enjoy safe and easily accessible drinking water.

As both companies progress with this pilot project, anticipation builds around the potential for these sustainable practices to influence broader applications. The results could lead to enhanced living conditions in underserved areas and stronger resilience against future water crises, ensuring that all communities have the tools they need for a safe and secure life.
