MADD Launches 'Safe Summer' Campaign to Ensure Safe Celebrations During Memorial Day Weekend

As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, families across America are gearing up for barbecues, road trips, and leisure time on the water. However, as celebrations commence, Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) is emphasizing the importance of safety. With the unofficial start of summer, MADD has introduced its annual 'Safe Summer' campaign, a crucial initiative aimed at preventing impaired driving and promoting safety among teens during this high-risk season.

Memorial Day weekend, known for its festivities and travel, often sees a rise in accidents related to impaired driving. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal that in 2022 alone, drunk driving was responsible for 215 fatalities, translating to a staggering 43% of all traffic deaths during this period. Beyond roadways, alcohol remains a significant factor in boating accidents, accounting for 17% of water-related fatalities in 2023, as noted by the U.S. Coast Guard. The risk from Boating Under the Influence (BUI) is just as serious as impaired driving on land, highlighting the need for caution across all recreational activities.

MADD urges everyone to take a proactive approach toward safety by planning ahead. Simple measures can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Using rideshare services, designating a sober driver, or arranging for public transport can save lives. For those enjoying time on the water, responsible drinking should be a priority; it’s advisable to limit alcohol consumption or save drinks for after safely returning ashore. Every small decision contributes to a safer community.

MADD's CEO, Stacey D. Stewart, emphasizes the essence of responsibility during this holiday, stating, “Memorial Day is a time to relax and revel in the start of summer. However, it must also be a moment where safety prevails. Our 'Safe Summer' campaign is designed to encourage families to prepare, communicate with teens regarding safe driving practices, and celebrate while making smart choices.” It's a reminder that one decision can deeply impact the safety of everyone on the road or water.

The campaign's teachings are especially critical for teenagers, who statistically face higher risk levels behind the wheel during the summer months. Historical data between 2010 and 2019 show that over 7,000 individuals lost their lives in teen driving-related accidents between Memorial Day and the beginning of the school year. Therefore, MADD encourages parents to have ongoing conversations with their teen drivers regarding safe driving practices and the realities of impaired driving.

To assist in these interactions, MADD offers resources such as the 'Power of Parents Handbook,' which provides practical information to help open communication between parents and teens about making responsible decisions while driving.

In conjunction with the 'Safe Summer' campaign, MADD is also aligning its efforts with the NHTSA's 'Click It or Ticket' campaign. This yearly reminder emphasizes the importance of seatbelt use, which is one of the simplest and most effective methods for ensuring safety on the roads, both as drivers and passengers.
