Exploring Ancient Egypt: Exciting Workshop for Young Scholars at Kawai Juku School

Unveil the Mysteries of Ancient Egypt with Dalton School

Kawai Juku's Dalton School in Tokyo is gearing up to host an engaging workshop aimed at elementary school students, designed to dive into the captivating world of Ancient Egypt. Scheduled for December 13, this workshop welcomes new first graders (current kindergarteners) through new sixth graders (current fifth graders) to embark on a thrilling adventure of exploration and discovery.

This workshop aims not just to educate but to ignite the curiosity of young minds. Today's educational landscape is increasingly emphasizing experiential learning, where understanding is deepened through hands-on activities that encourage problem-solving and collaboration among peers. Particularly for younger students, fostering interests through sensory experiences is vital for enhancing their willingness to learn. As students progress into higher grades, the ability to formulate questions and connect acquired knowledge with real-life situations becomes essential.

With this educational philosophy in mind, Dalton School Tokyo has initiated an after-school program tailored for elementary students, meeting once a week for an hour on weekdays or Saturdays. This Ancient Egypt Workshop will serve as a glimpse into the experiences offered in the after-school courses.

Program Highlights

The workshop will present different activities tailored to various grade levels:

For Younger Students (New Grades 1-3)

Participants will be introduced to fundamental knowledge of Ancient Egypt using storybooks, visual aids, and videos. Children will become explorers as they engage in a treasure hunt within the school, utilizing hieroglyphs — the ancient Egyptian writing system. This engaging hands-on approach will allow them to learn about Ancient Egyptian culture and history through interactive activities, stimulating a natural interest in archaeology that combines learning with excitement.

For Older Students (New Grades 4-6)

The program for older students will evolve from topics discussed in social studies and will include complex problem-solving quests. Using knowledge acquired from their studies about Ancient Egypt's geography, cultural practices, funerary items, and religious beliefs, students will participate in various activities, including mummy-making and pyramid puzzles, as they embark on a mission to uncover treasures hidden within the ancient world.

By progressing through these challenges, students will naturally absorb historical knowledge while cultivating their curiosity. This workshop, being its inaugural session, promises to be a multifaceted adventure tailored to help children discover what they love through experiential learning, embodying Dalton School's unique approach.
