Singapore Biennale 2025 Invites Over 80 Artists to Transform Daily Life with 'Pure Intention'

Singapore Biennale 2025: A Transformative Artistic Journey

This October, Singapore opens its doors to the eighth edition of the Singapore Biennale, titled Pure Intention. This international contemporary art exhibition, organized by the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and commissioned by the National Arts Council, will showcase more than 100 artworks created by over 80 artists, including 30 new commissions that promise to reshape our understanding of daily life in the city.

The theme 'Pure Intention' serves as a lens through which to explore the evolution of Singapore's urban landscape and social fabric. Rather than merely presenting art in conventional settings, the Biennale seeks to engage audiences from all walks of life in reimagining their city, thus highlighting its multifaceted identity. Art will be displayed across multiple venues and public spaces, ranging from historical landmarks to bustling malls and tranquil greenspaces.

Curators Duncan Bass, Hsu Fang-Tze, Ong Puay Khim, and Selene Yap share that this Biennale aims to provoke reflections on how architectural and social systems shape Singapore. They encourage audiences to engage with themes such as rapid urban development, historical contrasts, and future possibilities through an artistic lens grounded in pure intention. This approach will unpack Singapore's complex realities against a broader global narrative. They express hope that by activating everyday spaces, the Biennale will foster dialogue among diverse cultures, igniting connection and curiosity toward our shared cosmopolitan futures.

Highlights of the Biennale

The exhibition will feature art at iconic landmarks and thriving community spots throughout Singapore, promising a rich experience for visitors. Key highlights include:

  • - SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark: This venue will serve as the central hub for the Biennale, showcasing new works alongside pieces from Singapore's National Collection.

  • - Civic District: Here, audiences can delve into the varied histories of the communities that have shaped Singapore. Colombian-American artist Gala Porras-Kim explores labor and rest through the lens of migrant worker poetry.

  • - Rail Corridor South: This 24-kilometer nature trail, once a commercial railway, will feature an immersive installation by Joo Choon Lin, focusing on reimagining human perception as an expression of activity and movement.

  • - Orchard Road: Singapore's famous shopping district will host installations capturing the essence of everyday spaces amidst rapid urban change. Filipino artist Eisa Jocson’s karaoke videos, made in collaboration with domestic workers, convey powerful themes of inspiration, struggle, and resilience.

With early-bird tickets available for SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark until October 30, 2025, and free access to all other Biennale venues located in public areas, this event is set to be inclusive and accessible to all.
