Sapporo High School Students Create Art for Hotel
In a unique initiative, students from Sapporo's Moichi High School participated in a workshop to create botanical art that will adorn the rooms of the upcoming Comfort Hotel ERA Sapporo North, scheduled to open on December 18, 2025. This workshop, organized by Space Co., Ltd. and supported by Choice Hotels Japan, took place on October 19, 2025.
A Fusion of City and Nature
The workshop involved twelve students from the art club and those aspiring to pursue design studies. Their task was to create pieces that embody the themes of
Sapporo's urban vibrance and the
beauty of the four seasons using local plants. The workshop was supervised by two experts: Kazunori Ito, who operates the Wagokoro Farm in Gifu, and Junko Ito, head of the Satoyama Design Studio. With their guidance, the students learned how to handle plant materials and were instructed on composition techniques.
Rediscovering Sapporo’s Charms through Color
Before diving into the art creation process, the students engaged in a brainstorming session to fuel their creativity. They listed elements representing Sapporo—scenery, architecture, food, and culture—while selecting colors from a palette of 48 options that resonated with their vision of
Sapporo's multi-faceted charm. By associating these keywords with colors, students began to conceptualize the color palette for their artwork.
Art Reflecting Urban-Natural Harmony
Using materials gathered from their surroundings, such as Japanese maple and ginkgo leaves, students carefully chose plants that represented the harmony of urban life and nature. The workshop's theme, “
Harmony between Urban and Nature,” inspired them to embark on creating their art. They mixed vibrant colors into the plants and meticulously applied them to paper, hoping to convey the unique essence of Sapporo's nature and colors through their work, one piece at a time.
76 Unique Art Pieces Capturing Sapporo
Over eight intensive hours, the workshop culminated in the creation of 76 distinctive pieces of art. Each artwork reflected the individual interpretation of “
Sapporo's Colors” by the students, encompassing themes like
Sapporo in Winter,
Sapporo Through the Four Seasons, and
Sapporo Sports. Every piece told a story and showcased the diverse beauty that Sapporo has to offer.
Participants expressed their excitement and hopes for their creations:
- - “I would be thrilled if guests could relax while enjoying my artwork in their rooms.”
- - “Even if guests visit during one season, I hope they can feel the beauty of Sapporo's seasons through my art.”
- - “I can’t wait to see my garden's plants transformed into art displayed in the hotel.”
