A Glorious Journey Through WHG Hotels' History in Japan

Celebrating WHG Hotels: A Journey Through History

Fujita Kanko, a pioneer in Japan's tourism industry, has continuously contributed to creating a rich, vibrant society since its establishment in 1948. In anticipation of its 70th anniversary in November 2025, this year, 2026, marks a special milestone as it is the 100th year since the beginning of the Showa era. To commemorate this significant period, WHG Hotels has organized several initiatives that reflect on its historical journey, most recently featuring the timeline of the WHG brand.

The Birth of Washington Hotels

In June 1973, Fujita Kanko opened the first Washington Hotel in Sapporo. The hotel was named in recognition of George Washington's spirit of founding, with the vision of offering business travelers an affordable yet comfortable stay. The Grand Opening of Shinjuku Washington Hotel

In December 1983, the Shinjuku Washington Hotel opened with 1,301 rooms, becoming Japan's largest single-building hotel at the time. Known for its innovative approach, it introduced the revolutionary card key system, replacing traditional metal keys and promoting guest convenience. This was a time when automated front desk services were virtually unheard of, yet WHG took the initiative to adapt to the evolving demands of travelers with new technologies and services.

Emergence of Hotel Gracery

In October 2008, the brand Hotel Gracery was launched as a higher-tier offering from Washington Hotels, starting with the opening of Hotel Gracery Tamachi. Aimed at discerning guests, the name 'Gracery' blends
