Samsung Electro-Mechanics Launches Revolutionary MLCC for LiDAR Applications in Autonomous Vehicles

Samsung Electro-Mechanics Unveils World’s First MLCC for LiDAR Applications

On February 5, 2025, Samsung Electro-Mechanics introduced its pioneering multi-layer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) specifically designed for LiDAR applications, a critical component in autonomous driving technology. This new MLCC, identified by the model number CL05Y225KP66PN, features a high capacity of 2.2uF and operates at an impressive voltage of 10V, which is a 60% increase over the previous standard of 6.3V. Moreover, it is incredibly compact, adhering to the 1005 format (measuring just 1.0mm x 0.5mm).

The significance of this launch lies not just in the product specs, but in the robust advancements it represents in automotive technology. This MLCC has achieved qualification to the AEC-Q200 standard, an important benchmark for reliability in automotive components, making it the first of its kind to meet this specification with a combination of high voltage and capacity.

LiDAR systems are essential for many advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and are also integral to the future of fully autonomous vehicles. The introduction of this MLCC means improved performance in critical areas such as power supply stability and precise signal transmission.

Achieving high voltage in MLCCs is typically challenging, as increasing the dielectric layer thickness to handle higher voltages often reduces capacitance. However, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has overcome this challenge using exclusive additives and innovative manufacturing processes that minimize voids in the dielectric material, ensuring stable operation even at elevated voltages.

Choi Jeremy, the Executive Vice President and head of the Component Solution Unit at Samsung Electro-Mechanics, emphasized the rising demand for high-performance, reliable MLCCs, particularly due to the increasing electrification of vehicles. He stated, "We will strengthen our competitive advantage through differentiated technology by securing critical advancements in materials, equipment, and manufacturing processes for MLCCs. We will actively respond to growth markets with a focus on high-value products."

This next-generation MLCC is versatile and can support a range of automotive applications, including advanced driving assistance systems, vehicle body controls, chassis controls, and infotainment systems. As the automotive industry increasingly pivots towards advanced technologies such as electric and autonomous vehicles, innovations like Samsung's latest MLCC will be crucial in maintaining safety and performance standards.

By actively expanding its product lineup for the automotive segment, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is poised to play a key role in the ongoing evolution of the automotive industry. The launch not only underscores their commitment to advancing technology but also aligns with broader industry trends towards smarter, safer vehicles. This is just another step in the company's ongoing mission to lead in high-tech capacitors and support the automotive revolution.
