Consumers Prefer Real Christmas Trees for Their Scent and Experience, New Survey Shows

The Scent of Tradition: Why Consumers Choose Real Christmas Trees

As the holiday season approaches, a new survey by the Real Christmas Tree Board has shed light on the preferences of consumers when it comes to their Christmas trees. With 85% of respondents agreeing that real Christmas trees bring joy to everyone who experiences their beauty and fragrance, the survey highlights the emotional connection people have with nature during this festive season.

The Joy of Aroma and Experience

Marsha Gray, the executive director of the Real Christmas Tree Board, stated that the survey results indicate a strong appreciation for the unique scent of real Christmas trees. The aroma not only fills homes with the essence of the season but also enhances overall holiday experiences. In fact, 89% of participants felt that the smell of a real tree makes their home feel festive, while 85% believe that it improves their holiday experience. Additionally, 84% found the natural scent to be relaxing.

Beyond the fragrance, having a Christmas tree is a cherished opportunity for families to create lasting memories. The survey noted that 'making memories with my family' was cited as the second most important reason for choosing a real tree, right after its delightful scent.

Accessibility and Availability

The good news for potential buyers is that nearly all respondents (98%) reported finding a tree they loved, and 91% found it easy to locate a nearby retailer. Reports suggest that this year will see a robust supply of trees, with 84% of growers indicating they won't be raising wholesale prices – and some may even lower them. Last year, a remarkable 90% of those who purchased a natural tree believed the investment was well worth it. Gray expressed excitement about the festive shopping experience, noting that consumers can easily find the perfect real tree to enhance their family traditions.

For many, maintaining family traditions is a source of happiness – 53% of Hispanic respondents said that honoring family customs brings them joy.

First-Time Buyers Embrace the Change

Those considering making the switch to real trees for the first time can find encouragement in the positive feedback from past newcomers. Almost all respondents who converted to real trees last year relished the experience, with nearly 90% wishing they had made the change sooner. A hopeful 90% of participants anticipated their children would continue the tradition in the future.

Some of the top reasons newcomers reported for choosing a real tree included wanting to try something different (42%), the desire for a more authentic holiday experience (37%), and the unique aroma that only real trees can provide (36%).

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

In addition to their aesthetic and emotional appeal, real Christmas trees are an environmentally friendly choice. Similar to pumpkins used during Halloween, these trees are cultivated with care and are 100% recyclable and biodegradable. Interestingly, 23% of Hispanic respondents indicated that the environmental impact influenced their decision-making process.

Gray elaborated, saying, "First-time natural Christmas tree buyers can rest assured knowing their choice supports a sustainable crop, backed by generations of dedicated farmers. For every tree harvested, at least one new tree is planted."

Convenient Shopping Options

Real Christmas trees can be found across the country at cut-your-own farms, temporary lots, nurseries, home improvement stores, and local businesses. Consumers are encouraged to verify hours, prices, and tree species availability with their preferred retailer. To kickstart their search, shoppers can visit RealChristmasTrees.com, where a store locator, tree type guide, care tips, and more can be accessed.

Methodology of the Survey

The survey, conducted by TRUE Global Intelligence (TGI), involved 1,500 U.S. adults aged 21 to 54 who celebrate Christmas or display a Christmas tree. Each participant plays a role in the decision-making about the type of tree to have in their home. The study was executed from August 19 to September 2, 2025, with a margin of error of ±2.5%.

Furthermore, the Real Christmas Tree Board also collaborated with growers to assess the market dynamics for Christmas trees, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of trends impacting this beloved holiday staple.
