Commonwealth Care Alliance Achieves 4.5 Star Rating
On October 9, 2026, Commonwealth Care Alliance (CCA), a dedicated healthcare services organization, announced its achievement of a remarkable 4.5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for its Massachusetts Senior Care Options (SCO) plan. This rating places CCA among the top 16% of health plans nationally, emphasizing their commitment to delivering high-quality care tailored for individuals aged 65 and older who are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.
The Significance of the Ratings
CMS' Star Ratings system evaluates health plans based on a variety of factors, including clinical performance, patient experiences, and health outcomes. In the 2027 ratings, which assessed 508 Medicare Advantage plans, the average rating came out to be 3.99 stars. Earning a score of 4 stars or higher indicates that CCA’s plans demonstrate significant performance across up to 40 unique quality measures.
John Koehn, CCA’s President, expressed pride in their team’s hard work, stating, "Advancing from 4 to 4.5 stars reflects the discipline and compassion of our teams and the progress we have made in strengthening quality, accountability, and operational performance. This achievement tangibly demonstrates our progress towards creating better, more consistent health outcomes for our members."
Focus on Quality and Accountability
Over the past year, CCA has made significant strides in improving various aspects of their SCO plan. Their integration into CareSource systems has enabled even greater operational and administrative performance. As a result, CCA scored high in member experience, chronic condition management, preventive screenings, medication adherence, and behavioral health services.
The SCO plan now serves over 19,000 individuals, many of whom have unique needs and chronic health issues. Notably, a significant portion of these members, who are typically nursing home eligible, are living independently in their communities with the help of CCA’s extensive support and resources.
In addition, CCA’s One Care plans, which cater to individuals aged 21 to 64 who are also dually eligible for MassHealth and Medicare, received a 4-star parent organizational rating for 2027. Both One Care and SCO programs are designed to provide comprehensive services at no cost to members, with an aim to maintain their health and independence.
CCA's Commitment to Member-Centered Care
CCA maintains its mission-driven approach by creating integrated, person-centered healthcare solutions that address the complex needs of its members. Their commitment to comprehensive care is further exemplified by their coordination with local community providers and organizations, facilitating tailored support for each individual.
As part of the CareSource family, CCA benefits from shared resources and expertise, enhancing their capabilities to deliver high-quality services. This collaboration allows them to continue making strides in improving health outcomes for their members.
