Join Chicago's First Outdoor Christmas Sing-Along with Treasurer Maria Pappas

This December, Chicagoans are invited to gather for an extraordinary celebration of music and community spirit during the inaugural Christmas Sing-Along at St. Benedict's Church. Organized by Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas and Maestro Scott Arkenberg, this special event will take place on Sunday, December 14, at 5:00 PM on the beautiful steps of St. Ben's, found at 2215 W. Irving Park Road in North Center. With a backdrop of holiday cheer and festive lights, attendees can anticipate a heartwarming evening filled with singing and unity.

"For more than a hundred years, St. Benedict's Church has served as a sanctuary for spiritual nourishment and community fellowship," says Treasurer Pappas. She expresses her excitement about this event, emphasizing, "Caroling is one way to continue that tradition by uplifting our community with joyful music and praise. It’s a celebration we want everyone to be part of!"

The event promises to be a vibrant gathering with an array of activities designed to engage all members of the family. In addition to the community sing-along featuring popular traditional carols from diverse backgrounds, attendees will be treated to delicious churros and hot cocoa, perfectly complementing the winter festivities. Maestro Scott Arkenberg adds his enthusiasm, remarking, “Our aim is to create a celebratory atmosphere that reflects the historical melting pot of cultures that St. Benedict's represents, showcasing a blend of tastes and sounds.”

There will be an intergenerational choir composed of dedicated St. Benedict's students and parishioners, who will join Treasurer Pappas to sing a variety of beloved carols, embracing the sounds of American, Mexican, and European traditions. To further elevate the festive spirit, the choir will be accompanied by an 8-piece mariachi band, adding an exciting layer of cultural richness to the tunes.

St. Benedict's Church has stood as a cornerstone of the North Center community for generations. It is one of the largest parochial schools in the area, benefitting about 650 students and their families. As such, this event is not just a performance; it is a way to strengthen community ties and celebrate the shared joy of the season.

"Though this is the first St. Ben's Sing-Along, we aim to establish it as the biggest and joyous gathering in Chicago. We invite families, friends, and neighbors to step away from their busy lives to share their voices in celebration of the holiday spirit. Come make some magical memories with us on those hallowed steps!" encourages Pappas.

As the holiday season unfolds, mark your calendars for an evening of carols, community, and joy. Whether you are a seasoned singer or a first-time caroler, St. Benedict's Christmas Sing-Along promises to be an unforgettable experience. Come share in the spirit of Christmas with music and merriment that resonates through the heart of Chicago.
