Reducing Last-Mile Delivery Strain with Electric Lifts
On June 4, 2025, Palsystem Tokyo (located in Shinjuku, Tokyo) held a delivery ceremony for its first electric lift at the Mitaka Center. This innovative lift is tailored specifically for the cooperative’s delivery operations, aiming to halve the time spent on loading products onto trucks, thereby significantly easing the labor burden on employees, especially those with limited physical strength.
The electric lift was delivered from PCS Co., Ltd. (based in Sagamihara, Kanagawa), following a successful trial of an initial power lift. This particular model was specially developed in collaboration with Okudaya Giken Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Osaka), taking into consideration the nuances of cooperative delivery. The lift features arms and chains designed to prevent box toppling, and adopts a flat design for added safety.
Previously, workers had to manually unload products from dollies at waist height, sort them, and lift them into trucks—often leading to fatigue. A typical delivery route required handling over 100 individual boxes, along with around 25 bulky refrigerated containers, which could take experienced workers 30 minutes to up to an hour to load.
However, during the trial phase, the electric lift proved to dramatically reduce loading times from 7 minutes and 45 seconds manually to just 3 minutes and 2 seconds using the electric lift. Remarkably, this lift does not require any special certifications or extensive training for operation, allowing staff to manage products easily, even from heights of nearly 190 cm without straining.
Key Features of the Electric Lift
- - Efficiency: The time taken to load items has been reduced significantly, enhancing overall productivity.
- - Ease of Use: Simple operations mean that any staff member can use the lift without extensive training.
- - Safety Improvements: Eliminates the need for reaching high racks, reducing the risk of injuries.
Palsystem Tokyo and Palsystem Kanagawa each received one electric lift, with future plans for gradual integration within the cooperative group. Given the predictions of extreme heat in 2025 and ongoing labor shortages, the introduction of the electric lift aims to preserve workers' physical stamina and reduce work hours compared to traditional methods.
