Suma Universal Beach Project: Celebrating an Award-winning Initiative

The Suma Universal Beach Project, an NPO founded in 2016, has made significant strides in promoting an inclusive beach environment for all, regardless of disabilities. This remarkable initiative recently received the excellence award at the 4th GR Public-Private Partnership Awards organized by the Japan GR Association. The accolade was presented on April 4, 2026, during the 7th Japan GR Summit at SHIBUYA QWS in Tokyo.

About the Award and Summit

The Japan GR Summit is a significant event that brings together various stakeholders to foster discussions around sustainable development and public-private collaborations. This year's summit, titled “A Future Paved by Public-Private Partnerships,” featured a session where Director Shogo Tohara shared the experiences and ongoing efforts of the Suma Universal Beach Project.

Located in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, the project aims to transform society’s perception of “cannot” into “can.” Through community engagement, they are working toward creating a universally designed beach that welcomes individuals with disabilities, the elderly, and young children.

Tohara expressed gratitude towards partners across Japan, noting that their collaboration has been instrumental in the project’s success. He shared stories of the challenges and triumphs encountered in creating a supportive network while emphasizing the valuable experiences gained on the ground.
