Tech4Nature Phase Two Launches in Mexico
On April 14, 2025, the second phase of the Tech4Nature project was officially inaugurated during the Tech4Nature 2025 summit held in Mérida, Mexico. This initiative, spearheaded by Huawei in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and local partners, seeks to enhance the conservation of jaguars in the Dzilam de Bravo State Reserve while also examining the effects of climate change on biodiversity.
The launch was supported by Mexico's Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Yucatán state government, and local partner C-Minds. Marina Robles, the Undersecretary of Environmental Policy and Natural Resources, emphasized that 42% of Mexico is currently facing significant degradation challenges, necessitating robust biodiversity monitoring and restoration efforts. "This collaboration signifies the importance of combining science, technology, empowered communities, and committed governments in conservation," noted Robles.
Tech4Nature, aligned with Huawei's TECH4ALL initiative and the IUCN Green List, was launched in 2020 to leverage innovative technology for achieving effective conservation outcomes. Joaquín Díaz Mena, the Governor of Yucatán, stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to conservation, stating, "Today, we celebrate a shared vision that acknowledges that conservation can no longer rely solely on good intentions or isolated policies. We require scientific and technological integration alongside community involvement."
The jaguar, classified as “Near Threatened” on the IUCN Red List, faces habitat loss and fragmentation. In the project's first phase, 60 audio devices and over 20 camera traps were deployed in the reserve, allowing the AI-trained system to recognize species vocalizations and images. By April 2025, these efforts successfully confirmed the presence of nine jaguars and identified 147 species within the area.
Phase two will focus on gathering data regarding jaguar population distribution and providing data-driven insights to enhance reserve management with the goal of establishing a biological corridor. The Tech4Nature 2025 summit gathered experts, scientists, and conservation leaders globally, showcasing advancements and technology-driven conservation strategies. Tao Jingwen, Director of the Board and Corporate Sustainable Development Committee at Huawei, remarked, "Digital technology is revolutionizing biodiversity conservation through more efficient strategies, enabling governments and conservationists to act swiftly and accurately. I invite more partners to join the Tech4Nature initiative to transform digital technology into a common tool for global ecosystem conservation."
In addition to Mexico, the summit explored phase two projects in Brazil, China, Spain, Kenya, and Turkey, illustrating how digital technologies and AI analysis can be tailored to the unique needs of diverse ecosystems. Ursula Parrilla, Director of the Regional Office for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean (ORMACC) of the IUCN, expressed optimism for the second phase, stating, "This new chapter will cover six countries, fostering transformative change for species, ecosystems, and their communities. By integrating technology into large-scale conservation efforts, we contribute to global objectives focused on placing nature at the heart of sustainable development decisions."
The upcoming phases in various countries boast specific focuses, such as evaluating the impact of climate change on the Marajó Island ecosystem in Brazil, using digital solutions to assist in the rarest primate's repopulation in China, and addressing marine protected area monitoring in Kenya, among others. The Tech4Nature summit highlighted how collaboration among the tech sector, NGOs, governments, academic institutions, and local communities has created a new paradigm in biodiversity and ecosystem protection.
