Alexis Ortega Crowned 2026 U.S. Bartender of the Year

In an exciting culmination of talent and creativity, Alexis Ortega from Philadelphia, PA, has been awarded the prestigious title of 2026 U.S. Bartender of the Year at the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation’s World Class competition sponsored by DIAGEO, held in Chicago from May 11-13. This event showcased the top 15 bartenders across the nation, each vying for the honor of representing the United States at the upcoming World Class Global Finals in Scotland.

The competition, renowned for its rigorous challenges, required bartenders to demonstrate exceptional creativity, technical proficiency, and the capacity to perform well under pressure. Over a span of three grueling days, finalists navigated through various challenges that pushed their skill sets and showcased their unique styles. This was the inaugural year for the collaboration between DIAGEO and the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, aimed at enhancing education, mentorship, and career growth within the bartending community.

Ortega's journey to victory was marked by his ability to blend creativity with composure and hospitality. With over two decades of experience in the hospitality sector, he is acknowledged for his approachable yet innovative bartending style, delivering experiences that captivate patrons. “World Class challenged me in all the best ways,” Ortega expressed. “It pushed me to think on my feet, trust my instincts, and present my narrative through the cocktails I create.”

His winning cocktails, crafted during the U.S. Finals, included inventive flavor combinations that wowed the judges. Ortega's signature drinks—'First Call' and 'Melone di Bella Vista'—each reflected his personal journey and the rich culture from which they originated.

Ortega's first cocktail, First Call, features a combination of Mr Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur, Tequila Don Julio Reposado, grapefruit syrup, and a touch of saline, topped off with grapefruit soda and a grapefruit wedge for garnish. The preparation involves shaking the ingredients with ice, straining into a Collins glass, and finishing with a refreshing soda.

For his second cocktail, Melone di Bella Vista, Ortega combines Tanqueray No. TEN gin with chamomile bitter bianco, concentrated honeydew melon, centerbe, and melon liqueur. This cocktail is stirred and served over a large ice cube, presenting a vibrant dish of flavors.

Charlotte Voisey, Executive Director of the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, noted, “From the very first challenge, Alexis demonstrated skill and a strong sense of identity behind the bar. His journey inspires many.”

As Ortega prepares for the Global Finals this fall, where he will compete against elite bartenders from over 50 countries, he brings a distinct perspective and passion that is sure to shine on the world stage. He emphasizes the importance of community and support within the industry, stating, “I’m excited to bring that energy and a little dancing to the world stage.”

DIAGEO's Erin Creighton echoed the sentiment of celebration and opportunity within the bartending community, emphasizing the talent that the U.S. finalists displayed this year.

With plans for the next World Class U.S. season already in motion, aspiring bartenders should keep an eye out for application details. The event continues to emphasize skill development and a brighter future for professional bartenders everywhere, making this more than just a competition, but a platform for lasting change.
