Services PMI Indicator Shows Continued Growth in October 2026 with 54.5%

Services PMI Report - October 2026

The ISM Services PMI Report for October 2026 reflects a continued expansion in the services sector, revealed by a reading of 54.5%. Although this figure signifies a slight decrease of 0.4 percentage points from September's rate of 54.9%, it marks the 28th consecutive month of growth. The report, released by chair of the ISM Services Business Survey Committee, Steve Miller, outlines various indices that contribute to the overall Services PMI, providing insights into industry trends and economic activity.

Detailed Index Insights

Among the key indices calculated, the Business Activity Index recorded a value of 53.8%, which is a decrease of 2.7 percentage points from the previous month's reading of 56.5%. This suggests a slowdown in growth within this segment, however, it still remains above the crucial 50% threshold indicating expansion. New Orders also saw a reduction to 55.9%, down by 3.9 points from 59.8%, indicating a softer demand compared to previous months.

The Employment Index showed improvement, rising to 51.4%, which is an increase of 1.3 percentage points, suggesting a stabilization in employment within the sector for the second consecutive month. This can be viewed as a positive indicator that companies are beginning to increase their workforces in response to demand.

Furthermore, the Supplier Deliveries Index was reported at 56.7%, illustrating a continued trend of slower deliveries—this is typically seen when demand outpaces supply. Meanwhile, the Prices Index remains elevated with a reading of 73%, confirming persistent inflationary pressures, as this index has been above 70% for seven out of the last eight months.

Sector Performance

In terms of sectors, 15 industries reported growth in October, an increase of two sectors compared to the previous month. Among those leading the expansion were Transportation & Warehousing, Retail Trade, and Information. Notably, Agriculture, Forestry, Fish & Hunting, and Healthcare experienced contractions, showing the varying dynamics across industries within the services landscape.

Respondents to the survey cited several challenges, particularly regarding supply chain issues and inflationary pressures due to fuel prices and tariffs. Many stated that they have not fully passed these higher costs onto their customers, forecasting potential pricing pressures in the near future.

Looking Ahead

The overall picture painted by the ISM Services PMI report suggests that while there is continued growth in the services sector, underlying challenges remain, particularly regarding inflation and supply chain dynamics. The positive aspect of the sustained expansion, with all indices in growth territory for the first time since February 2026, indicates resilience and adaptability within the services sector.

As we move forward, continued attention will be directed towards monitoring inflation rates and their impacts on consumer spending, as well as how supply chains adapt to these ongoing challenges. The economic outlook remains cautiously optimistic, with the Services PMI forecast indicating a potential real GDP increase as a result of sustained sector activity.

In conclusion, the October 2026 ISM Services PMI offers a nuanced understanding of the current economic climate, showcasing both growth and the hurdles that lie ahead as businesses navigate these complex conditions.
