PGE Unveils 475 MW Battery Storage to Enhance Oregon's Energy Reliability
PGE Energizes New Battery Energy Storage Systems
Portland General Electric (PGE) has marked a significant milestone in enhancing energy reliability for Oregonians. On August 7, 2025, the company announced the completion of three utility-scale battery energy storage systems that collectively contribute a robust 475 megawatts (MW) and over 1.9 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of dispatchable capacity. Located strategically across the Portland metro area, these facilities are a game-changer for energy management.
In practical terms, this new capacity is capable of powering approximately 300,000 homes for up to four hours, especially during peak demand or unanticipated outages caused by adverse weather conditions. PGE is committed to ensuring that its customers can access electricity when they need it the most. As Darrington Outama, PGE's Senior Director of Energy Supply, aptly puts it, “Batteries play an important role in helping PGE build a more flexible, reliable, and diverse generation portfolio.”
The newly installed battery systems are equipped with critical lithium-ion technology, enhancing the company's capacity to respond to sudden fluctuations in the grid. This advancement translates into a more stable power supply at a sustainable cost for customers. The innovative battery storage mechanisms not only mitigate reliance on short-term electricity purchases but also contribute to cost stabilization and limit price volatility for consumers. Moreover, they support the integration of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar.
Let's delve into the details of the newly operational facilities:
1. Seaside: A pivotal 200 MW battery storage facility located in North Portland, developed by Eolian, L.P. under a fixed-cost Build-Transfer Agreement. This facility commenced operations in July 2025.
2. Sundial: This 200 MW facility based in Troutdale is a testament to effective partnerships; it was developed by Eolian and is operated under a 20-year storage capacity agreement with PGE by NextEra Energy Resources. It was fully operational by December 2024.
3. Constable: Another PGE-owned facility, Constable contributes an additional 75 MW of capacity in Hillsboro. Constructed under a partnership with Mortenson, it also began operations in December 2024.
