NAMI's Concerns Regarding House Budget Resolution
In a recent statement released on February 26, 2025, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) expressed serious concerns over the U.S. House of Representatives’ budget resolution that could significantly undermine mental health care for millions of Americans. NAMI’s CEO, Daniel H. Gillison, Jr., articulated the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that potential reductions to Medicaid would endanger access to vital mental health services.
The House has advanced a budget proposal that may impose cuts amounting to around $880 billion from various programs, including Medicaid. This raises alarms for over 72 million individuals covered under Medicaid, which serves as a critical lifeline for those seeking mental health care, including families, children, pregnant women, veterans, and individuals living with disabilities.
Gillison stated, “The House's decision to advance this resolution is disheartening for everyone but particularly for those struggling with mental health issues. With mental illness affecting one in three individuals in the U.S., the risk of reduced access to care is not just a financial issue; it represents a potential crisis in health care.”
Medicaid plays a pivotal role in funding essential services like therapy, medication, crisis support, and much more. The continuation of these services is crucial in fostering recovery and improving the quality of life for those affected by mental health conditions. Unfortunately, the proposed budget cuts could sharply reduce access and make it harder for individuals to receive timely and necessary care.
Through advocacy, NAMI has mobilized its community, sending over 57,000 messages to lawmakers urging them to reject any cuts to Medicaid. Gillison reassured advocates and families, stating, “Though we face a significant challenge, our commitment is unwavering. We will not allow mental health care to be overlooked. The stakes are too high, and we must persistently fight for equitable access to mental health services.”
He urged members of Congress to prioritize the protection of Medicaid during the ongoing budget negotiations, calling on federal policymakers to reject barriers that could impede access to mental health care services.
As discussions continue, many advocate groups stress that without adequate funding and support, millions of Americans’ mental health care could be severely compromised. The implications of these funding cuts reach beyond individual conditions; they affect families, communities, and society as a whole. Mental health care is a fundamental aspect of overall health, reinforcing the importance of continuous advocacy and funding in this area.
Given the deep-rooted challenges associated with mental health, it is crucial for the Senate and House to protect Medicaid funding, ensuring individuals across the nation can access the care they deserve.
