Introduction to the Project
In a collaborative effort to enhance traffic safety education, Sony Network Communications and Sompo Japan have initiated a new program aimed at elementary school students. This innovative initiative, titled "Creating Together! Next-Generation Traffic Safety Map Project,"addresses the critical need to reduce traffic accidents involving children, particularly during busy after-school hours. By merging advanced technology with experiential learning, the project offers a fresh perspective on traffic safety education.
Background
Despite existing traffic safety measures, incidents involving young pedestrians remain unsettlingly high, especially among lower-grade students. Previous educational approaches have predominantly relied on traditional classroom instruction, which often fails to resonate with children. Many students find it difficult to relate to the material, resulting in minimal behavioral changes.
Recognizing these challenges, the partnership between Sony Network Communications and Sompo Japan leverages state-of-the-art AI behavior analysis technology, derived from Sony's Advanced Pedestrian-Assistance Systems (APAS), to create a hands-on learning experience. This initiative also integrates Sompo Japan's expertise in traffic safety and insurance, allowing children to engage actively with the content and understand the significance of traffic rules.
The program is set to pilot in February 2026 at Hoya Elementary School in Nishitokyo City, with plans for national implementation thereafter.
Program Overview
An Experiential Learning Journey
The program encourages students to adopt the role of researchers, investigating and evaluating the safety of their commuting routes. The project unfolds over three key phases:
1. Learning Through Workshops
The program begins with an engaging workshop conducted by Sompo Japan and Sony Network Communications. Utilizing the concept of a treasure hunt, students will explore their surroundings while identifying critical traffic rules and safe walking practices. Additionally, the mechanics of the APAS system will be introduced, empowering students to take on the role of "temporary researchers" tasked with monitoring pedestrian safety within their communities.
2. Actionable Data Collection
Participants will utilize a GPS device designed by Sony Network Communications, equipped with AI that detects risky behaviors, such as unexpected road crossings. Over a two-week period, children will carry this device to gather data on their daily activities, enabling them to visually understand their behaviors and associated risks.
3. Creating a Safety Map
The collected data will be analyzed to generate a heat map, highlighting hazardous areas along students' commuting routes. This information will serve as the foundation for classroom discussions, during which children will collaboratively create a digital Traffic Safety Map. By identifying and understanding the risks in their neighborhoods, students will gain valuable insights into traffic safety and become proactive members of their communities.
Unique Features and Value Proposition
The project stands out due to its data-driven methodology, fostering an academically rigorous perspective on traffic safety while encouraging students’ ownership of their learning journey.
- - Evidence-Based Learning: Leveraging objective data not only boosts students' confidence in their understanding but also enhances the educational outcomes of the program.
- - Empowering Students: This initiative nurtures problem-solving skills and self-directed learning, enabling students to identify issues and devise solutions effectively.
- - Community Impact: The developed maps and associated data can inform local traffic safety measures and initiatives, contributing to broader public safety improvements.
Looking Ahead
With a commitment to expanding the reach of this innovative program, Sony Network Communications and Sompo Japan aim to provide widespread access to high-quality traffic safety education for children across the nation. Furthermore, the insights gained from the program will be shared with local authorities, police, and various stakeholders to foster a safer environment for children to live, study, and play.
