A New Era of Commerce with Shopify
In a transformative move, Shopify Japan has introduced its Agentic Commerce functionality, enabling millions of merchants to sell products seamlessly through AI chat environments. This integrated system allows businesses to reach ChatGPT users directly from their stores without the need for complex system setups or additional configurations.
Starting this week, U.S.-based buyers can engage with a myriad of products offered by Shopify merchants via
Agentic Storefronts. This means businesses can easily access major AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and the Gemini app through Shopify's centralized management interface. The introduction of the
Agentic Plan will further extend these selling opportunities to brands not currently utilizing Shopify, allowing them to list products in the Shopify Catalog and reach customers through similar AI channels.
Shopify has been at the forefront of eCommerce innovation for over two decades, integrating key functionalities such as merchandising, payment processing, fraud prevention, tax management, fulfillment, and subscriptions into a singular operating system. This robust foundation not only supports online stores and POS systems but now extends to sales through AI agents.
According to Mani Fazeli, Vice President of Products at Shopify,
“Agentic Commerce is not merely a trend but a vision that Shopify is realizing at the intersection of commerce and AI. Given Shopify’s scale, we are tasked with understanding the direction of commerce evolution, ensuring we build infrastructure that works reliably even as changes arise.”
Enhancing the Shopping Experience on ChatGPT
With these innovations, hundreds of millions of ChatGPT users can now purchase products from Shopify merchants without leaving the chat interface. Customers have the ability to browse the Shopify Catalog and complete their purchases directly within the app's browser, maintaining the buying experience crafted by the merchants in terms of brand experience, pricing strategies, payment methods, and checkout configurations. For desktop users, a new tab will redirect them from ChatGPT to the merchant's online store.
From the merchant's perspective, integrating this functionality is effortless. Products are displayed on ChatGPT by default without any additional system integrations or app installations, eliminating the need for extra transaction fees aside from standard payment processing charges. Furthermore, all orders originating from ChatGPT are recorded in the Shopify dashboard, enabling merchants to track their sales accurately while retaining their position as the primary seller and ownership of customer relationships and data.
Neil Ajala, who leads commerce products at OpenAI, emphasizes the importance of discovery in the ChatGPT shopping experience.
“We assist users in comparing options to find the best products for their needs. By integrating information from Shopify’s entire merchant ecosystem, we have made it easier than ever for hundreds of thousands of merchants and billions of products to be accessible through ChatGPT. This is a significant step towards evolving ChatGPT into a superior personal shopping assistant, while also allowing businesses to maintain control over the customer experience.”
Expanding Sales Opportunities Across AI Channels
Shopify recognizes that consumer behavior on AI platforms is evolving in diverse ways across markets, industries, and customer segments. By accommodating a wide array of AI channels, the platform empowers businesses to seize sales opportunities wherever customers engage. Thousands of businesses are already selling through Microsoft Copilot, and in the near future, Shopify Pay will enable seamless purchases in real time. Some brands have begun selling via Google’s AI Mode and the Gemini app as well.
These initiatives are backed by the
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard co-developed by Shopify and Google, which aims to support transactions between AI and businesses. UCP has gained traction from numerous companies, including Walmart, Target, Etsy, American Express, Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa.
Sapna Shah Parikh, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing & Digital for Fenty Beauty Brands, notes,
“We are a brand that connects with customers everywhere, and now that includes AI channels. Our efforts have always been community-centered, ensuring that we remain close to our customers. With Shopify, Fenty Beauty can naturally enter conversations that our customers are already having, guiding them even before they start looking for products. Being present where our customers are is fundamental to our brand essence.”
Empowering All Businesses with AI Sales Channels
Shopify merchants gain instant access to these AI channels through Agentic Storefronts from their management interface. Product information syncs in real-time across channels, minimizing the need for separate app development or fragmented data management. Brands can maintain control over the sales process while showcasing products on numerous channels.
Recognizing the need for product discovery through AI extends beyond existing Shopify merchants, the company has globalized the
Agentic Plan. This allows businesses not currently using Shopify to list their products in the Shopify Catalog, making them available for sale via ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini app, Microsoft Copilot, and the Shop app.
Structured and precise data is crucial in these AI channels. The Shopify Catalog offers organized and updated product data, enabling relevant information to be displayed precisely when users are searching for items. Currently, the Agentic Plan is available to all brands for utilization.
Future Perspectives
Commerce is no longer confined to just websites and apps. The emergence of purchasing behavior within AI chats, work tools, and search results suggests that it will continue to evolve in diverse forms.
Mani Fazeli reiterates Shopify's commitment to foresight:
“We continuously look ahead to enable merchants to be where customers expect them to be. Our role is to ensure they can quickly establish themselves in whatever direction commerce heads.”
Shopify's network effects, powered by unique data, deep insights into merchants, and integrated infrastructure, empower the platform to deliver excellent purchasing experiences and a reliable foundation for commerce in the AI era, paving the way for new customer connections and revenue opportunities for businesses.
