In a groundbreaking initiative, Loandeal Inc., based in Tokyo, has collaborated with VITAL DESIGN to conduct a comprehensive study assessing the impact of cross-border programs on improving the skills of corporate employees. The study, which involved 260 participants, utilized the "Innovator DNA Diagnosis" developed by Indie Japan to measure the enhancement in seven key innovator skills before and after the rental transfer experience. The results showed statistically significant improvements across all metrics, confirming that this method is an effective platform for developing the attributes of successful innovators.

Understanding the National Study


This study is notable for its scale and thoroughness, marking one of the first large-scale evaluations of such a program in the country. All participants underwent rigorous statistical analyses to track changes in the essential skills deemed necessary for innovation. The analysis indicated a statistically significant increase (p < .001) in all seven skills, substantiating the hypothesis that rental transfers significantly enhance innovator qualities.

The Seven Key Skills of Innovators


The Innovator DNA Diagnosis evaluates essential traits across three dimensions: discovery power, execution power, and courage. The seven skills identified include:
1. Questioning: The ability to challenge existing frameworks and ask fundamental questions.
2. Observing: Gaining insights from subtle changes in customer needs and environments.
3. Networking: Building connections with diverse individuals to broaden perspectives.
4. Experimenting: Learning from rapid trials and failures.
5. Associating: Linking seemingly unrelated questions, problems, and ideas.
6. Challenging the status quo: Questioning existing conditions to identify areas for improvement.
7. Risk-taking: The willingness to take calculated risks.

Results of the Study


Remarkably, each of the seven skills demonstrated improvement from the start to the end of the rental transfer periods. The most significant enhancement was noted in networking skills, which increased by an average of 0.887 points on the assessment scale.

1. Questioning: Increased from 4.795 to 4.988 (+0.193)
2. Observing: Improved from 4.542 to 5.198 (+0.656)
3. Networking: Rose from 4.420 to 5.307 (+0.887) — the highest improvement
4. Experimenting: Went from 4.892 to 5.349 (+0.458)
5. Associating: Increased from 4.641 to 5.320 (+0.679)
6. Challenging the status quo: From 5.095 to 5.418 (+0.323)
7. Risk-taking: Improved from 4.103 to 4.613 (+0.511)

Understanding the Connection


A path analysis conducted as part of this study revealed a transformative process where rental transfers cultivate the courage to tackle unknown challenges and increase the execution of behavioral skills like questioning, observing, and experimenting. This aligns closely with the Innovator DNA model proposed by Clayton Christensen, demonstrating a high statistical fit for adaptability (CFI=0.9988) based on the experiences of the participants.

Insights from Industry Leaders


Various representatives from the participating companies highlighted the significance of these findings. Takashi Watanabe of VITAL DESIGN noted the structural integrity of the Innovator DNA model from the pre-to post-experience assessments, validating the role of the rental transfer in enhancing innovator traits effectively.

Shingo Tsuda, from Indie Japan, emphasized the connection between action-oriented behaviors and innovation capacity, reiterating the importance of environmental factors in fostering such traits.

Yukiyuki Goto from Loandeal stated, "In today's business environment, the role of leaders is shifting from managing existing operations to discovering and transforming unknown challenges."
