This week, Tianjin, a key city in northern China, hosted the
2024 World Vocational and Technical Education Development Conference. The event attracted about
1,000 delegates from around the globe, who gathered to engage in meaningful discussions about the integration of
vocational education and industry, sustainable development, teacher training, and lifelong learning.
Organized by the
Ministry of Education of China, the
National Commission of China for UNESCO, and the local government of Tianjin, this conference aims to elevate vocational education as a driver of innovation and sustainable development worldwide. Attendees were privy to six major initiatives designed to reshape global vocational education, featuring keynote addresses, ministerial roundtables, and bilateral talks.
The conference kicked off with eight core key initiatives, which include:

- - The presentation of international vocational education awards.
- - An international skills competition showcasing 42 learning groups.
- - An exhibition highlighting achievements in vocational education, intangible cultural heritage, and international cooperation.

Stefania Giannini, Assistant Director-General for Education at UNESCO, emphasized the crucial role of vocational education as a catalyst for transformation. During her video address, she referenced a recent UNESCO recommendation emphasizing education in peace, human rights, and sustainable development. Giannini urged for increased investments and innovations in vocational education to tackle global challenges, affirming that skills are essential to navigate today's complex world.
On the domestic front,
Huai Jinpeng, China's Minister of Education, acknowledged that vocational education must align with contemporary trends while preserving its unique characteristics and fostering a spirit of innovation. He outlined a vision for vocational education termed the “
5I” model, which focuses on being inclusive, industry-oriented, innovative, intelligent, and international. This model aims to serve all, integrate with industries, promote innovation, adopt intelligent technologies, and facilitate global cooperation.
To ensure smooth volunteer services during the conference, the
Tianjin Youth League engaged
1,448 young volunteers from nine universities, including
Nankai University. Their responsibilities encompassed over
30 tasks such as guest registration, conference coordination, translation services, media reception, and providing medical assistance.
This event not only underscores the importance of vocational education in tackling future workforce needs but also highlights the collaborative efforts required among nations to build an effective educational network.
