Sailing For Veterans Launches New Therapeutic Sailing Program Honoring Service Members
Sailing For Veterans' New Therapeutic Initiative
On November 11, 2025, in a commendable move to honor those who have served, Sailing For Veterans launched a free sailing program that allows veterans to enjoy the healing power of the sea. This thoughtful initiative features day sails aboard the sailboat SV INDRA, which is moored in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
Partnering with the VetsBoats Foundation, an all-volunteer non-profit organization based in Sausalito, California, this program extends its reach to include operations out of Provincetown Harbor on Cape Cod. This allows veterans not only to experience sailing but also to engage in maritime memorial wreath toss ceremonies, providing a unique way to honor fallen comrades while immersed in nature.
Sailing For Veterans aims to empower veterans and active-duty service members through opportunities that connect them with the tranquility of the water. These voyages foster camaraderie among participants, allowing them to forge new bonds while experiencing the therapeutic benefits of sailing. Nature's calming environment helps participants to build teamwork, gain peace, and broaden their perspectives, ensuring the joy of sailing resonates long beyond their time on the water.
The initiative was inspired by the memory of Marine Lance Corporal Jason K. Burnett, who lost his life while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom on May 11, 2006. His brother, Ryan Burnett, a Gold Star Family member, and fellow United States Marine, co-founded Sailing For Veterans to honor Jason's legacy. Ryan, alongside George Dratelis, made it their mission to support veterans, believing deeply in the power of community in the healing process.
Lance Corporal Jason Burnett was not just a military man but also a person who valued laughter and gave his all for those around him. His commitment to serving others extended beyond his military duties, showcasing his spirit as someone who dedicated himself to helping those in need. With the combined passion of both Ryan Burnett and George Dratelis, Sailing For Veterans stands as a testament to this belief—serving veterans and ensuring they do not face their challenges alone.
As George Dratelis, Executive Director and Co-Founder, expressed, working on this initiative is an honor. The mission is personal; inspired by Lance Corporal Burnett's service, it aims to promote health and well-being among veterans navigating the complex waters of life after service.
Sailing For Veterans represents a unique doorway to healing, tapping into the joys of the maritime experience to uplift former service members across the nation. This initiative strives to foster resilience and facilitate therapeutic recovery for veterans facing challenges such as PTSD and other service-related injuries.
Sailing For Veterans, together with VetsBoats, emphasizes the importance of this project. VetsBoats is a recognized leader in veteran outreach, using sailing's transformative nature to provide a sense of purpose and connection to those who have served. With both organizations dedicated to creating opportunities for veterans, they aim to improve their mental health and overall well-being.
This program not only serves as a reminder of Jason's sacrifice but highlights a collective commitment to uplift and support those who have given so much for their country. The journeys will undoubtedly create lasting memories while proving that healing can happen at sea.
In a world where veterans often feel isolated in their struggles, Sailing For Veterans and VetsBoats are paving the way for hope, camaraderie, and solace through the beautiful art of sailing.
