Yomiuriland Conducts Earthquake Evacuation Drill for Visitors to Raise Disaster Awareness

Earthquake Preparedness Training at Yomiuriland's Amusement Park

On August 29, 2025, about 120 members of the Yomiuriland Club participated in a comprehensive evacuation drill held at Yomiuriland amusement park, simulating a seismic intensity of 6 on the Richter scale. The event was organized by Yomiuriland Co., Ltd. and Taisho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Following the evacuation drill, participants were given Taisho's disaster-prepared food product, the "Lipo Vitamin Jelly Long-Term Storage" drink, during a donation ceremony for the city of Inagi. This initiative aimed to improve public disaster awareness ahead of September 1st, known as "Disaster Prevention Day."

This training was conducted in light of increasing risks from potential earthquakes like the Nankai Trough and Tokyo metropolitan earthquakes, emphasizing the crucial need for preparedness and awareness. By hosting the drill in the unique environment of an amusement park, participants could gain realistic experiences of evacuation techniques.

Yomiuriland's longstanding commitment to ensuring safety, which has been reinforced since its opening in 1964, saw enhanced training protocols especially after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The collaboration with Taisho Pharmaceutical, a partner since 2021, allows both companies to leverage their strengths to promote disaster readiness. Taisho continues to develop disaster relief food products that aim to provide essential nutrition during emergencies.

Realistic Drill Experience

The training's first part took place at the amusement park's attraction, "Lipo Vitamin Rocket☆Luna," where the drill began with an announcement signaling an earthquake scenario. Participants experienced immediate emergency response as park staff promptly evacuated riders and those waiting in line to designated safe zones. This practice drill successfully showcased evacuation procedures while instilling a sense of urgency and awareness that participants deeply felt during the simulation.

Feedback from attendees highlighted the seriousness they approached the training with. One visitor remarked, "Initially, I was anxious, but being rescued reassured me." Another participant expressed a newfound motivation to adopt proactive disaster preparedness practices in their daily life.

Following the evacuation, attendees received the Lipo Vitamin Jelly, which had been designated as emergency food stock. Participants praised its portability and taste, expressing relief that it was easy for both adults and children, emphasizing its importance in their emergency kits. After a thorough review of the day’s experiences, the Yomiuriland team reported a successful evacuation within approximately ten minutes without any injuries.

Contribution to Community Disaster Readiness

After the drill, the event proceeded with a donation ceremony at the seal exhibit in the park. The executives from Yomiuriland and Taisho Pharmaceutical expressed their commitment to enhancing disaster preparedness within their community. "By conducting these drills in partnership with Taisho Pharmaceutical, we aim to elevate public awareness regarding disaster preparedness," stated North, Yomiuriland's Executive Director of Amusement Operations.

Taisho's Brand Management Head, Sato, praised their ongoing collaboration and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support Inagi City through the donation of emergency food supplies, reinforcing their intention to contribute to local disaster readiness through ongoing initiatives.

Expert Panel Discussion

The event featured a special talk show led by disaster expert Kojiro Nomura, focusing on the topic of "Proper Evacuation and Stockpiling for the Tokyo Earthquake." Nomura praised the collaborative spirit displayed by participants during the drill and emphasized the need for vigilance even in seemingly safe environments, such as amusement parks.

He discussed the unpredictable nature of disasters and stressed the importance of being prepared in various scenarios — beyond familiar locations such as homes or workplaces. Nomura also laid out the essentials of effective evacuation strategies and highlighted the significance of pre-emptively gathering information and developing a solid plan. He noted the importance of maintaining a well-managed supply of emergency goods and the necessity for routine checks on expiration dates.

North also reflected on the lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake, sharing insights on the park's proactive safety measures. He emphasized Yomiuriland's commitment to continual improvement in its disaster response strategies.

Facility Preparedness

Yomiuriland has established a specialized storage facility for substantial disasters, ensuring both visitors and employees have access to vital supplies, including food and water as well as emergency provisions such as blankets and portable toilets. Their ongoing commitment underscores the park’s dedication to safety and community welfare.
