Fuji TV and TaiwanPlus Collaborate on Documentary Series Featuring Shuhruf Ishida

Fuji TV and TaiwanPlus Collaboration

Fuji TV has embarked on an exciting initiative in collaboration with TaiwanPlus, Taiwan's first English-language platform operated by the Public Television Service (PTS). This joint venture marks the debut of a documentary series that delves into Taiwan's rich cultural tapestry through the lens of Shuhruf Ishida, a young traveler known for his unique living arrangement of seeking temporary shelter from locals across the country.

The Series Premiere: 'The Non-Fiction: Can I Stay Tonight? 2'

The first installment of this collaborative project builds on the popularity of Shuhruf Ishida’s previous documentary, “Can I Stay Tonight?” which aired in October 2023. Known for his nomadic lifestyle, Ishida travels with just a backpack, engaging with strangers to share stories and meals each night. Over the last four years, he has stayed in over 800 homes, connecting with various individuals who also find solace in these fleeting encounters.

In January 2025, Ishida traveled back to Taiwan, where he first began his journey, to rediscover the roots of his unique lifestyle. This new chapter offers a glimpse into how his experiences have transformed while he navigates Taiwan's urban landscape, speaking with locals in a mix of broken English and Chinese. As he stands on street corners once again, he faces the realities of a different culture while posing the question of identity and purpose.

Future Installments: Spotlight on Youth Culture

The second part of the collaboration will focus on Taiwanese youth culture, capturing the essence of the “TECH WORLD” pavilion at the Osaka Expo, showcasing a blend of cutting-edge digital technology and Taiwan's natural beauty. Featuring performances from the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, established over 50 years ago, the documentary will highlight Taiwan's artistic expression and technological advancements, aiming to transmit the vibrant energy of Taiwanese culture to a global audience.

The Mug Shots Project

In the third installment, audiences can look forward to original productions from TaiwanPlus, featuring diverse topics such as Taiwanese cuisine, travel opportunities, and industries relevant to an international audience. Selected works will be streamed on the FOD platform, enhancing cultural exchange and understanding between Taiwan and Japan.

The Vision Behind the Collaboration

The partnership represents a significant milestone for both Fuji TV and TaiwanPlus, who aim to bring Taiwanese stories and experiences to viewers. Michael Yu, CEO of TaiwanPlus, expressed enthusiasm about this international collaboration, highlighting the importance of exploring and sharing Taiwan's diverse culture through engaging narratives.

Fuji TV's Chief Producer, Yojiro Nishimura, also shared his excitement regarding the project, emphasizing how Ishida’s unique lifestyle sheds light on cultural values and human connections between the two nations. The series aims to resonate with viewers, offering unique insights into Japanese and Taiwanese perspectives on life and community.
