Zacapa Rum Unveils Exclusive Edition to Mark 50 Years of Craftsmanship

Zacapa Rum Unveils 50th Anniversary Edition

Zacapa, the renowned premium rum brand hailing from Guatemala, commemorates its remarkable 50-year journey with the launch of the Zacapa 50th Anniversary Edition. This special limited edition, crafted by head mixologist Lorena Vásquez, introduces a groundbreaking innovation in the North American market. Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of Guatemala, this rum showcases the exceptional craftsmanship that has defined the brand over the decades.

The 50th Anniversary Edition features a unique blend of rums aged between 8 to 24 years, showcasing a meticulous aging process that deepens its character. The rum undergoes a special finishing method in oak barrels that have been toasted with Guatemalan cocoa and Cobán chili pepper skins, imparting distinct notes of roasted cocoa and fine spices to the spirit. Vásquez remarked, “Throughout my decades of experience with Zacapa's aging process, I've continuously explored what new possibilities can arise from it. For the 50th Anniversary Edition, I drew inspiration from ancient celebration rituals in Guatemala, where drinks made from cocoa and chili traditionally bring people together. We aspire to pay homage to this legacy while exploring a fresh perspective on Zacapa through our aging techniques.”

A Unique Aging Process

While this anniversary edition utilizes a new finishing technique, it maintains the core characteristics that have shaped Zacapa's identity. The rum is produced from fresh sugarcane syrup, which is fermented and distilled on the Pacific coast of western Guatemala before being transported to Zacapa’s aging facilities set at an altitude exceeding 2,300 meters. Here, the rum is subjected to the dynamic Solera aging system, moving through barrels that previously held American whiskey, sherry, and Pedro Ximénez wine.

As the rum interacts with these varying barrels, its flavor profile grows in complexity and depth, ultimately achieving the signature balance and smoothness that Zacapa is renowned for. The final blend for the 50th Anniversary Edition is then placed into the specially toasted barrels for additional maturation, allowing the wood to further infuse the rum with rich cocoa and spice notes. After resting for several months in larger oak vats, the rum is bottled, capturing its intricate bouquet of flavors.

Upon tasting, the Zacapa 50th Anniversary Edition unfolds with aromas of vanilla and caramelized fruits. The palate reveals a harmonious blend of woody, toffee, and spice notes, complemented perfectly by hints of cocoa and the warmth of Cobán chili. The finish is long and inviting, with lingering roasted aromas and a comforting spiciness.

Celebratory Events and Special Cocktails

In celebration of this milestone, Vásquez will embark on a tour across major markets in the United States, hosting intimate tasting events to share the artistry of Zacapa, delve into Guatemalan traditions, and explore the brand's rich fifty-year history. Celebratory activities will also launch with signature cocktails featuring a drink called GuateMai Tai, crafted using the Zacapa 50th Anniversary Edition mixed with orange liqueur, almond syrup, fresh lime juice, and aromatic bitters, available at select partnering venues.

Designed with a commemorative tube and adorned with Zacapa's iconic handwoven petate band in a vibrant reimagination, this edition not only honors the 50-year legacy but also highlights the deep-rooted connections between the brand and Guatemalan craftsmanship and culture.

The Zacapa 50th Anniversary Edition is set to retail for $49.99 and will be available starting October 15 in select markets across New York, California, Texas, and Florida.
