Dr. Lisa Su Takes the Helm as Chair of the Semiconductor Industry Association
Dr. Lisa Su Takes Charge at SIA
In a landmark decision, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has officially appointed Dr. Lisa Su, the Chair and CEO of AMD, as the new Chair of its Board of Directors. This election comes at a crucial time for the semiconductor industry, which has seen immense growth and transformation in recent years.
The SIA represents a whopping 99% of the U.S. semiconductor industry by revenue, and nearly two-thirds of non-U.S. chip firms, making it a central player in shaping policy and innovation in the tech landscape.
John Neuffer, President and CEO of SIA, expressed enthusiasm about Dr. Su's election, highlighting her impressive history of pushing the limits of semiconductor technology for several decades. He stated, “Lisa has pushed the boundaries of semiconductor innovation for decades and is an extremely strong and influential leader in our industry. We look forward to her leadership in the year ahead.”
Dr. Su's extensive background in the semiconductor field spans over 30 years. Under her leadership, AMD has evolved into a global powerhouse in high-performance computing and a major supplier of cutting-edge AI chips. Before becoming CEO, she served as the Chief Operating Officer at AMD, where she seamlessly unified various business units, sales teams, and operational strategies to achieve a singular focus on execution and market impact. Her influential tenure includes high-level positions at major firms such as Freescale Semiconductor (now part of NXP Semiconductors), IBM, and Texas Instruments.
Educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dr. Su holds a PhD in electrical engineering and has been recognized for her pioneering contributions to the semiconductor industry, including receiving the prestigious Robert N. Noyce Award in 2020.
In a statement reflecting on her new role, Dr. Su underscored the significance of the semiconductor sector in American innovation, economic growth, and national security. She conveyed her commitment to enhancing U.S. semiconductor competitiveness during her tenure at SIA, saying, “It’s an honor to serve as Chair of SIA at such an important time. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues on the SIA Board of Directors to strengthen U.S. semiconductor competitiveness.”
As Chair, Dr. Su aims to forge policies that will not only promote growth and innovation within the chip sector but also ensure America's leadership in this foundational technology. With her innovative mindset and extensive experience, she is poised to guide the SIA into a future filled with opportunities and challenges in the ever-evolving semiconductor landscape.
The SIA's primary mission revolves around advocating for the semiconductor industry, which is recognized as a key driver of America's economic strength and security. By collaborating with Congress, the Administration, and other key stakeholders globally, SIA seeks to bolster leadership in semiconductor manufacturing, design, and research.
In light of these developments, all eyes are set on Dr. Lisa Su as she takes on this influential role. Her leadership could potentially steer the semiconductor industry toward an exciting future marked by innovation and continued resilience in the face of global competition.
