Seaweed Extract Demonstrates Efficacy in Prostate Symptom Relief
In a groundbreaking clinical trial conducted by the Australian biotechnology company Marinova, a unique extract of seaweed has shown promising results in alleviating the symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This study, which was randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled, evaluated the effects of fucoidan, a natural compound found in brown seaweed, on men diagnosed with BPH.
Understanding Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a prevalent health concern among men worldwide, with global estimates suggesting that between 50% to 60% of men aged 60 years are affected. This figure rises to about 90% in men aged 80 years or older. Although BPH is generally not life-threatening, it can lead to significant urinary symptoms such as difficulty in urination, weak urine flow, and increased frequency of urination, all of which can considerably lower quality of life.
The study, overseen by lead investigator Dr. Barbara Wimmer, was initiated due to the lack of clinically tested natural compounds that effectively support prostate health. Dr. Wimmer stated, "To date, very few natural compounds have been clinically studied and shown to be effective for prostate health. The documented bioactivities of fucoidan prompted us to undertake this innovative trial."
Study Design and Key Findings
The 90-day study involved 88 men, aged between 45 and 80 years, suffering from moderate BPH. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a daily supplement of high-purity fucoidan or a placebo. Key findings from the study revealed that those who received the fucoidan supplement showed:
- - Clinically significant improvements in overall BPH symptoms.
- - Over nine times better results in micturition-related symptoms (which include urination emptying, intermittence, weak urine stream, and straining during urination).
- - Twice the improvement in storage symptoms (including frequency, urgency, and nocturia).
- - Notable enhancement in quality of life due to relief from urinary symptoms.
The study utilized the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), a recognized tool for assessing changes in BPH symptoms. Dr. Wimmer highlighted, "Importantly, the trial results were clinically meaningful and demonstrated that fucoidan is safe throughout the study period. We hope these findings will pave the way for the commercialization of high-purity fucoidan to help alleviate BPH symptoms."
The results of this clinical trial were published in the journal
Research and Reports in Urology, validating the potential of fucoidan as an effective natural remedy for BPH.
