The Golden Scoop Unleashes Its Ice Cream Food Truck Adventure Across Kansas City

The Golden Scoop on Wheels

The Golden Scoop, an uplifting nonprofit ice cream and coffee shop based in Overland Park, is set to revitalize its approach by hitting the road with its very first food truck. This initiative not only marks the end of an era for its original shop at 9540 Nall Ave, which will serve its final ice cream cones on October 31st, but also symbolizes a new beginning for the local organization dedicated to providing job training and meaningful employment for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Golden Scoop opened its doors in April 2021, attracting enthusiastic crowds right off the bat. The establishment quickly outgrew its humble beginnings, prompting the opening of a second location less than three miles away at 10460 W. 103rd St., complete with a drive-thru to accommodate the ever-increasing demand. Realizing the potential for an even broader reach, The Golden Scoop decided to bring their iconic ice cream experience directly to the people of Kansas City with the mobile food truck.

“While we have deeply loved and cherished our original shop, our mission has always been about much more than four walls,” said Amber Schreiber, CEO of The Golden Scoop. “With this food truck, we can bring ice cream to games, office parties, and various events all around the city. This means more employment opportunities, additional training for our Super Scoopers, and an increased ability for the community to engage directly with the amazing individuals who make The Golden Scoop special.”

The introduction of the food truck opens a host of new opportunities for the engaging staff, affectionately known as the Super Scoopers. They will not only get to serve the community in a mobile setting, but they will also learn essential skills such as preparing for events, engaging with larger crowds, and operating effectively as a tight-knit team. Importantly, every current Super Scooper from the flagship location will maintain their position and continue to spread joy through their service at both the 103rd Street location and on the food truck.

Allison Woodland, COO of The Golden Scoop, reinforced that “nothing about who we are is changing. It’s still the same Super Scoopers, the same delicious ice cream, and the same smiles; we’re just extending our reach to share it with even more people.”

The timing of this transition coincides with National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October, a month dedicated to highlighting the contributions of employees with disabilities. To kick off October, The Golden Scoop launched its Celebrity Scooper program, featuring Kansas State Treasurer Steven Johnson serving ice cream, as an inspiring demonstration of inclusivity and community involvement.

As the original shop prepares to close its doors, fans and loyal customers are invited to stop by one last time before October 31st to celebrate the beloved establishment that has brought so much joy to the community. Though the food truck will soon take to the streets, the 103rd Street location remains nearby, ensuring that the cherished ice cream experience continues without interruption.

Additionally, The Golden Scoop’s presence in the community is already well established, with ice cream pints and cups available in local grocery stores and the introduction of the Golden Connection program, which supplies Golden Scoop products to special education classes in the Blue Valley, Olathe, and Shawnee Mission school districts.

A public ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly launched truck will be announced later this fall, serving as another exciting milestone for The Golden Scoop and its supportive community.
