Tokyo's Deep Tech Innovation Hub
Tokyo is taking significant steps towards bolstering its startups on a global scale with the launch of a Deep Tech Innovation Hub. This initiative is part of the city's broader strategy, known as the “2050 Tokyo Strategy,” which emphasizes the importance of nurturing startups that are poised for international success.
The Tokyo Innovation Hub (TIB) aims to serve as a central point, connecting startups with essential stakeholders including business firms and investors. This platform facilitates various support efforts designed to empower startups within the city, focusing especially on the deep tech sector—a field expected to experience significant growth worldwide.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has recognized the crucial role that fostering deep tech startups plays in enhancing the local ecosystem. As such, they are leveraging the strengths of TIB's network and capabilities to establish innovation centers well-equipped with essential support functions, including wet labs designed specifically for deep tech startups.
In June, the city called for applications from private enterprises interested in contributing to this innovation hub, leading to the selection of one key operator:
BioLabs Shinkiba LLC. This selection marks an exciting development for the hub's future.
About the Selected Operators
- - BioLabs Shinkiba LLC: A subsidiary of a Massachusetts-based global incubator, BioLabs is renowned for operating shared laboratories and incubation facilities that cater to life sciences startups across the United States and Europe. This new branch in Japan aims to replicate that success, providing the necessary resources for local startups to flourish.
- - Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd.: This prominent Japanese real estate company is instrumental in promoting a comprehensive cluster development approach by establishing a life sciences business development hub in Nihonbashi and a R&D facility in Shin-Kiba. With an emphasis on creating shared spaces such as wet labs and fostering community within the life sciences sector, they aim to stimulate open innovation.
Overview of the Innovation Hub
The hub, located on the second floor of Mitsui Link Lab Shin-Kiba 2 (1-17-8 Shin-Kiba, Koto-ku, Tokyo), is set to feature approximately 1,500 square meters of incubator space, equipped specifically for startups. Its primary focus will be on deep tech startups in the life sciences domain from both domestic and international backgrounds.
Leveraging BioLabs' extensive expertise, the hub will provide tailored support programs aimed at helping these startups establish global footprints while simultaneously nurturing local talent and innovation.
