Overcoming Challenges: Santina's Inspirational Journey in Uganda's Rhino Refugee Settlement
Empowered Through Learning: Santina's Story
Santina, a resilient 13-year-old, resides in the Rhino Refugee Settlement in Uganda, where her life is marked by incredible challenges and determined hope. Her story begins with her family fleeing the violence of South Sudan, arriving in Uganda with a heavy heart but still filled with the spirit of survival. Here in the refugee settlement, life is tough for everyone, but for Santina, a severe health condition has made education and daily activities feel like insurmountable hurdles.
At just six years old, after battling a high fever, Santina experienced paralysis on the left side of her body. Her mother recalls the heart-wrenching moment when her daughter could no longer engage in simple chores like cooking or cleaning, limiting her independence and mobility. Yet, despite these obstacles, Santina’s spirit remained unbroken. Four years ago, she began her educational journey at a primary school located about 2 kilometers from her home. The path wasn't easy, but thanks to a supportive program funded by Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and implemented by Humanity Inclusion (HI), she was given the tools she needed to overcome her challenges.
With ECW’s First Emergency Response grant, Santina received essential learning materials including books, pens, and games tailored to bolster her confidence and engagement in learning.
