Rwanda Advances Education with Smart Project Completion and DigiTruck Launch

On October 3, 2025, Rwanda celebrated a significant milestone in its educational landscape with the announcement of the completion of the first phase of the Smart Education Project, in partnership with Huawei. Additionally, the launch of the DigiTruck program at Kagarama High School marks a transformative step in enhancing digital literacy across the nation.

The Smart Education Project: A Leap Toward Digital Inclusion

The Smart Education Project aims to digitally empower Rwandan schools and improve educational standards. This initiative, which has already linked 1,500 schools to high-speed internet and established two advanced data centers, lays the foundation for a dedicated educational network designed to support digital learning nationwide. It aligns with Rwanda's Vision 2050 and its National Strategy for Transformation (NST), aiming to transition the country into a knowledge-driven economy that can compete globally.

The project's impact is profound, providing nearly 1.5 million students, both in urban and rural areas, equal access to quality education. As noted by Jin Jiqing, Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Rwanda, this initiative facilitates knowledge sharing and collaboration among students, bridging distance and breaking barriers: "A student in Kigali can now share knowledge remotely with peers in Rusizi, highlighting the real benefits of digital inclusion."

DigiTruck: Bringing Education to the Doorstep

Complementing the Smart Education Project is the newly launched DigiTruck initiative, designed to deliver free, tailored digital skills training to underserved communities. This program particularly targets school-age youth, girls, and farmers, ensuring that education is accessible to those who may lack internet connectivity or electrical infrastructure.

Equipped with laptops, internet access, and educational resources, the DigiTruck serves as a mobile classroom powered by solar energy, travelling to remote areas. Expert trainers deliver hands-on training, covering essential skills such as device usage, office software, online job applications, and even coding and robotics. As Eraste Rurangwa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT and Innovation in Rwanda, articulates, "Projects like the DigiTruck represent more than just technology; they are gateways to opportunities and empowerment for Rwanda's future as a knowledge economy."

In line with the NST2 goal of equipping one million citizens with digital skills, the DigiTruck will operate in all 30 districts of Rwanda over the next three years, aiming to train 5,000 Rwandans. Huawei's TECH4ALL program has successfully trained over 17,000 individuals across seven countries, furthering digital literacy goals globally.
