Reconnecting with Nature and Memories at FUTATABI FUTABA FUKUSHIMA
In June 2026, a new retreat hotel named
FUTATABI FUTABA FUKUSHIMA will open in the heart of Fukushima Prefecture, specifically in the town of Futaba. This establishment is the initiative of
Daiwa Life Next Co., Ltd., part of the Daiwa House Group, which aims to create a space that harmonizes with the natural environment of Futaba and the town's history. Central to this vision are two key components: a biotope that reflects the native ecosystem and a library that preserves the local memories.
Overview of FUTATABI FUTABA FUKUSHIMA
The hotel will feature the region's largest banquet and conference facilities, acting as a hub for local regeneration and community interaction. Located adjacent to the
Fukushima Disaster Memorial Center, which commemorates the events of the Great East Japan Earthquake and nuclear disaster, the hotel aims to serve as a bridge between past events and future growth.
Hotel Philosophy: Rebirth and Reunion
The concept of
FUTATABI translates to “once again” in English, embodying the desire to rediscover the charm of this town and its people. The hotel strives to foster a sense of tranquility, allowing guests to reconnect with their minds and bodies while enjoying the serene environment.
The Essence of Rejuvenation
The town of Futaba has undergone significant changes post-disaster, with its natural environment and community dynamics altered drastically. Despite some evacuations being lifted, the region requires time and careful nurturing to regain its vitality. The hotel firmly believes in the importance of embracing this journey, highlighting three fundamental themes:
- - Rebirth: Gaining back the natural surroundings of Futaba.
- - Reunion: Rediscovering the unique attributes of the town and its residents.
- - Return: Inviting guests to revisit the place and engage with its offerings.
Through these principles,
FUTATABI FUTABA FUKUSHIMA hopes to create an environment where nature can flourish and the local history can come alive, enhancing the visitors' experience.
Biotope Development: A Focus on Nature's Revival
Under the guidance of Professor Takahide Kurosawa from
Fukushima University, the biotope will be meticulously designed to reflect the area’s natural heritage. It will provide a sanctuary for local ecosystems to thrive. The plan includes cultivating indigenous wetland and grassland plants such as
Misohagi and
Himegama, selected based on their compatibility with the local climate and soil conditions.
The primary goal is to create a habitat where water insects and aquatic birds can return, ensuring that the environment nurtures and revitalizes itself over time. Efforts will be made to incorporate part of the original Futaba soil, enhancing the connection to the land's history.
Library of Memories: Connecting Past and Future
Adjacent to the hotel’s biotope lies the shared facility known as
Futaba no Hondana, housing a library that aims to connect the past experiences of the community with its future. Under the direction of book director Yoshitaka Haba, the library will become a space where literature serves as a bridge between generations.
With a planned collection of around 2,000 books, the library's selection will cover diverse topics such as the earthquake, local culture, nature, technology, and philosophy—encouraging visitors to contemplate life and heritage meaningfully.
The objective is to create a welcoming space for both hotel guests and local residents, fostering community interactions while nurturing the memory of Futaba.
Engaging the Community
In January 2025, a workshop was held at the Futaba Town Hall, led by Haba, to gather insights and preferences from local residents regarding book selection. This community engagement aims to shape the library's offerings based on the interests of the people and ensure that it reflects the town's spirit.
Haba envisions the library not merely as a collection of books but as a medium for fostering dialogue and respect for different perspectives and experiences. In an era dominated by digital interaction, the library aspires to provide a nurturing environment for readers to connect more deeply with physical books and explore their own thoughts.
The Retreat Experience
FUTATABI FUTABA FUKUSHIMA promises a unique retreat experience by integrating elements that rejuvenate both the body and mind. Facilities will include areas for relaxation infused with domestic timber, a library café, an all-day dining space showcasing local seasonal delicacies, and a biotope that changes with the seasons, encouraging guests to take a step back from daily life and introspect.
The hotel is designed as a five-story structure, blending modern architecture with the surrounding landscape, featuring a total of 98 rooms and several amenities such as conference rooms, a restaurant, a shop, a lounge, a spa, and a fitness center.
Construction of the hotel began in September 2024, culminating in its anticipated opening in June 2026. It signifies a new chapter for the town of Futaba, embodying the essence of rebirth, recognition, and remembrance.
