Zelle and Bank of America Innovate Charitable Donations with Fast Payment Solutions

In a groundbreaking development, Zelle® and Bank of America have announced an innovative application of the Zelle payment platform that is set to transform charitable contributions. This new feature allows for the near-instantaneous disbursement of funds from Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) to nonprofit organizations. Traditionally, this process has involved cumbersome paperwork and considerable delays—often taking weeks to complete. However, with the integration of Zelle, nonprofits can now receive donations swiftly and securely, thus streamlining the entire charitable giving experience.

The initiative is part of Zelle’s broader innovation agenda, dubbed Zelle® Forward, which aims to explore and expand practical use cases for the payment network. Presently, Zelle facilitates over $1.2 trillion in transactions annually, catering to everyday needs such as rent and childcare. By targeting charitable donations, Zelle aims to enhance the overall effectiveness and efficiency of philanthropy across the United States.

This new capability is being piloted through Bank of America’s Charitable Gift Fund, which is designed to help donors conveniently allocate their contributions to various nonprofit organizations. The quick transfer of funds not only brings relief to many nonprofits during urgent situations—such as natural disasters and community crises—but it also aligns well with the mindset of modern donors who prioritize speed and reliability in their charitable endeavors.

Denise Leonhard, the general manager of Zelle, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, "Zelle is a staple of the American economy and Americans are ready for it to do more." This initiative signifies the beginning of what is expected to be a series of advancements in how Zelle can be used to meet evolving philanthropic needs.

Donald Greene, Executive of Bank of America's Donor-advised Fund, echoed the sentiment by highlighting that the ability to allocate resources efficiently is crucial for nonprofits. He noted that this partnership not only empowers donors but also equips nonprofit organizations with the tools needed for rapid response to community needs, thereby amplifying their overall impact.

In the previous year, the Charitable Gift Fund distributed more than 100,000 grants, amounting to a staggering $1.3 billion directed to nonprofits. This illustrates the potential scale at which the new Zelle feature could operate, further increasing the flow of charitable funds where they are needed most. Throughout 2026, Zelle plans to continue assessing new innovations to enhance their platform and provide added value to American consumers.

Zelle® has a robust reputation for facilitating swift and reliable person-to-person payments, moving over $1 trillion between millions of consumers and small-business accounts. Supported by a network comprising more than 2,300 financial institutions, it offers individuals the ability to send and receive money directly, cutting out the need for cash, checks, or third-party applications. As Zelle continues to innovate, it not only strengthens its position in the digital payments landscape but also plays a crucial role in reshaping the future of charitable giving.

As Zelle and Bank of America work together, their partnership signals a promising shift in the way contributions are facilitated. By leveraging technology, they are not just improving financial transactions; they are ultimately enhancing philanthropic efforts and making it easier for individuals to support the causes they care about. The future looks brighter for nonprofits and donors alike, thanks to the enhanced capabilities being rolled out through this collaboration.
