Introduction to the Touristship Certification
Recent years have seen a growing concern for environmental degradation and conflicts with local residents in popular tourist destinations across the globe. Recognizing the importance of reevaluating traveler behaviors, the importance of sustainable tourism is gaining momentum. In response to these challenges, the Touristship Certification has been developed.
Founded in June 2025, Touristship Global Corporation aims to promote sustainable tourism through education. The term "Touristship" represents tourists who appreciate their destination and engage in responsible practices, a concept that has gained recognition in recent years. This initiative, launched by the Japan-based non-profit organization, aims to establish guidelines for travelers that encourage coexistence with host communities.
The Guidebook for Sustainable Travel Behavior
The "Touristship Code of Conduct," created by the Japan Touristship Association based in Kyoto, serves as the world's first comprehensive guidelines for tourists to contribute to sustainable tourism. This document outlines specific behaviors that help support sustainable practices from a traveler’s viewpoint. The guidelines, compiled with international standards from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), are structured into five key sections:
1.
Basics of Travel
2.
Socioeconomic Sustainability
3.
Cultural Sustainability
4.
Environmental Sustainability
5.
Support as a Local Resident
These sections collectively provide tourists with the necessary actions to be trustworthy travelers, establishing clear expectations to foster mutual respect with destinations.
Learning and Implementing Sustainable Practices
The importance of not only acknowledging these guidelines but also embodying them throughout one’s travels cannot be overstated. To facilitate this practice, Touristship Global Corporation has launched two distinct online certification programs that utilize the Code of Conduct.
