Introduction to WHILL Mobility Service in Kurashiki
On July 1, 2026, a new chapter begins for visitors to Kurashiki, a city in Okayama Prefecture known for its rich historical ambiance. The Kurashiki Tourism Convention Bureau and WHILL Inc. have partnered to introduce a revolutionary mobility service. This service utilizes the WHILL model, which doesn’t require a license and can seamlessly navigate pedestrian areas. The initiative aims to promote universal tourism, ensuring that every traveler, regardless of age or ability, can engage fully with the enchanting surroundings of Kurashiki's Bikan District.
Background
The rapid increase in domestic travel has led to predictions of record-high inbound visitor numbers in Japan, with estimates of 42.68 million visitors in 2025, marking a rise of 15.8% from the previous year. Additionally, as society grapples with an aging population and a push for inclusivity, the demand for accessible and accommodating environments has become paramount. The WHILL mobility service comes at a crucial time when Kurashiki welcomes over three million visitors each year, aiming to enhance both visitor experience and mobility in a region celebrated for its traditional aesthetics and beautiful landscape.
What is WHILL?
WHILL is a close-range mobility vehicle designed for ease of use without the need for a driver's license. The two models being introduced will be the flagship
WHILL Model C2, known for its impressive design and maneuverability, and the
WHILL Model R, a high-performance four-wheel scooter designed for footpaths. Both models promise intuitive operation with a speed comparable to walking, ensuring that users can navigate the historic district comfortably and freely.
Accessibility and Design
As Kurashiki works to maintain its classical beauty through cobblestoned pathways and historic buildings, the introduction of these mobility options is a significant step in enhancing accessibility. Whether due to age, disability, or simply a desire for ease of travel, this initiative aims to eliminate barriers to movement, allowing each visitor to explore at their own pace. The available models feature high design aesthetics, making them not only functional but also visually harmonious with their surroundings.
