Allegheny Health Network Welcomes New Executive Leaders

In a significant organizational move, Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has announced the appointment of two prominent leaders to critical positions within its executive team: Lou Baverso as the Chief Operating Officer and President of AHN hospitals, and Ezz-Eldin “Dean” Moukamal as the Chief Quality Officer. These appointments are expected to enhance the operational efficiency and the quality of care provided by the network as it continues its mission of promoting healthier communities in Western Pennsylvania.

Leadership Changes

Lou Baverso: Chief Operating Officer

Lou Baverso, who joins AHN from the UAB Health System, will officially step into his role on September 8. Baverso brings a wealth of experience in healthcare operations and administration, having previously worked for UPMC for over 30 years. At UAB, he played a key role in a strategic plan aimed at expanding access to care and increasing inpatient capacity within the health system. His significant contributions included overseeing a $450 million acquisition of the Ascension St. Vincent's Health System, boosting the network’s presence in central Alabama.

His educational credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Information from the University of Pittsburgh, an MBA from Chatham University, and a Master’s degree in Information Systems Management from Robert Morris University. Mark Sevco, President of AHN, praised Baverso's exceptional operational leadership and deep understanding of the healthcare landscape, asserting that his expertise will be instrumental in advancing AHN's objectives and delivering high-quality programs and services.

Ezz-Eldin “Dean” Moukamal: Chief Quality Officer

Dr. Ezz-Eldin Moukamal, who has served as AHN’s interim Chief Quality Officer since 2024, has been officially appointed to the position. He brings a strong clinical background and leadership experience, having previously held the title of Chief Medical Officer at AHN Forbes Hospital. Under his interim leadership, AHN has achieved numerous accolades for quality and safety, including four hospitals earning 'A' grades in The Leapfrog Group’s recent safety rating survey.

Dr. Moukamal has a robust track record in improving healthcare quality and safety, leading initiatives that ensure alignment with Highmark Health's quality objectives. His guidance was crucial when AHN effectively navigated a nationwide shortage of intravenous fluids and saline solutions, maintaining uninterrupted patient care when other facilities faced significant disruptions. His impressive accomplishments and commendable leadership qualities have earned him respect among his peers and patients alike.

Future Directions

The appointments of Baverso and Moukamal come at a pivotal time for AHN as it seeks to solidify its leadership in healthcare delivery in the region. Together, they will be responsible for directing AHN’s operational and quality strategies, ensuring that the network continues to excel in providing comprehensive medical services across its various facilities.

AHN operates 14 hospitals, numerous outpatient facilities, and employs around 23,000 people, indicating the scale at which these leaders will impact healthcare delivery. With their extensive backgrounds and proven records, Baverso and Moukamal are expected to drive AHN’s initiative to advance the Living Health model and provide remarkable health experiences for all patients.
