Huawei Unveils Smart Substation Solutions at Enlit Africa 2026 for Sub-Saharan Africa

Huawei's Innovative Smart Substation Solutions Unveiled at Enlit Africa 2026

On May 20, 2026, Huawei hosted the Southern Africa Electric Power Summit as part of the Enlit Africa 2026 event, marking the continent's most significant gathering of representatives from the energy and water sectors. The summit's theme, "Building Future Energy Systems, Unleashing Rapidly Growing Digital Intelligence Productivity," attracted industry leaders and partners, including South Africa's Eskom, Ghana's Public Utilities, Nigeria's Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE).

Huawei took this opportunity to introduce its innovative smart substation solutions tailored for Sub-Saharan Africa. These advancements aim to accelerate the digital transformation of the region's energy industry. In his keynote speech, Wang Guoyu, Vice President of Huawei's Energy Digitalization Division, discussed the evolution toward a prosumer-centered energy model, indicating that this new paradigm will drive energy system transformations across the continent.

The Shift Towards Intelligent Systems

According to Wang, the energy sector is at a pivotal moment in transitioning to intelligent systems, heavily influenced by communication technologies, artificial intelligence, and digitization. He underscored the vital role these elements play in reshaping the entire value chain of the energy sector—from production and transmission to distribution.

"AI technologies and robust communication solutions will continue to be pivotal for power utilities as they transition into a new era of intelligent systems," Wang emphasized, showcasing Huawei's commitment to delivering first-rate AI solutions that cater to the distinct needs of African energy firms.

In partnership with CIGRE and Zhuhai Unitech Power Technology Co., Ltd, Huawei's introduction of smart substations is a testament to its dedication to modernizing Africa's energy infrastructure. The company aims to empower the continent's energy providers to embrace digital advancements effectively.

Cutting-Edge Features of Smart Substations

Several representatives from African energy companies echoed the benefits of Huawei's smart solutions. One representative noted that the system integrates smart video technology, AI algorithms, and secure wireless networks to replace four critical manual operations with intelligent automation. This includes monitoring, inspection, meter readings, and analysis.

With these innovations, operational staff can now remotely monitor entire substations, reducing inspection times from several days to mere minutes. Furthermore, operational and maintenance costs have been slashed by up to 70%. Thanks to Huawei's involvement, the transmission network has gained sophisticated digital sensors, facilitating a shift from reactive repairs to proactive alerts.

A Roundtable on Private Wireless Networks

Post-summit, Huawei, CIGRE, and the 450 MHz Alliance organized a roundtable focused on private wireless networks and their telecommunications applications in the energy sector. Gösta Kallner, Executive Chairman of the 450 MHz Alliance, highlighted the growing importance of private wireless networks utilizing the 450 MHz spectrum. These networks provide extensive coverage, a well-developed ecosystem, and future scalability, establishing themselves as essential for reliable and sustainable electrical network operations.

Representatives from CIGRE underscored the importance of standardized technical frameworks and sharing global best practices to expedite the digital transformation of energy networks. All participants agreed that the establishment of a pervasive, secure, and efficient communication infrastructure is crucial for developing new energy systems and ensuring sustainable energy solutions across Africa.
