Welcome to Okdongsik's First Japanese Location
On August 7, 2025, Okdongsik, a popular eatery dedicated to the exquisite Komtang soup from Seoul, officially opens its doors in the bustling neighborhood of Okubo in Shinjuku, Tokyo. This highly-anticipated establishment marks Okdongsik's first foray into the Japanese market, following successful launches in Seoul, New York, and Hawaii.
A Culinary Journey: From Seoul to Tokyo
Founded in Seoul in 2017, Okdongsik has rapidly gained acclaim for its unique approach to Komtang soup, embracing the motto "Essence of Simplicity." This philosophy has driven the restaurant to perfect the balance of flavors using high-quality pork and aromatic vegetables, which together create the signature, clear broth that has delighted both locals and tourists alike.
For an astounding eight consecutive years, from 2018 to 2025, the Seoul flagship has been recognized with the Michelin Bib Gourmand label, a testament to its dedication to quality and culinary excellence. Renowned for its innovative craft, Okdongsik has expanded its presence globally, appealing to a diverse audience curious about Korean gastronomy.
The Star of the Menu: Deji Komtang
At the heart of Okdongsik’s offerings is the Deji Komtang. This dish features a fragrant broth made from simmered pork shoulder and carefully selected vegetables. Unlike the typically cloudy versions found elsewhere, the soup served here is crystal clear, offering a refreshing taste that exemplifies the quality of the ingredients. Traditionally, patrons enjoy this delightful soup in a style reminiscent of "kugba," where steaming hot broth is ladled over freshly cooked rice to enhance its flavor and texture.
The careful preparation nurtures a rich, mellow flavor that satisfies both the body and soul. Diners may also choose to add gochujang (fermented chili paste) for an extra twist of flavor, allowing them to personalize their culinary experience.
Exclusive Japanese Side Dishes
In addition to its signature bowl of Deji Komtang, Okdongsik offers three unique side dishes exclusive to its Japanese branch:
1.
Deji Toppap (¥400) - A comforting bowl featuring minced pork shoulder from the broth, paired with homemade garlic soy sauce over warm rice.
2.
Shrimp Donggulan (¥480) - Crispy fritters made with finely chopped shrimp and spring onions, fried in pork fat for a burst of flavor.
3.
Chilled Je-yuk (¥480) - Gently braised pork shoulder served cold, dressed with a soy and sesame oil sauce, offering a delicate and refreshing taste.

Completing the experience, Okdongsik introduces a range of exclusive beverages, including:
