A Commemoration of Faith and Leadership: Russell M. Nelson's Legacy
Remembering Russell M. Nelson
On September 30, 2025, we solemnly announce the passing of Russell M. Nelson, the cherished President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He left this world peacefully at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah, shortly after 10 p.m. MDT, at the remarkable age of 101. Nelson holds the record as the oldest president in the history of the Church.
A Lifespan of Service
Russell M. Nelson was called to be an apostle on April 7, 1984, before ascending to the presidency of the Church on January 14, 2018. His tenure as prophet will be eternally etched in the hearts of millions, fundamentally characterized by global ministry, unparalleled efforts in temple construction, and transformative changes within the Church.
His leadership was marked by an ambition to reach out beyond traditional boundaries, engaging with diverse communities across 32 countries and various territories in the United States. Nelson was not just a religious figure; he was a dynamic force, announcing the creation of 200 new temples during his time as president. These initiatives significantly emphasized the Church’s mission to uplift and serve humanity, mirroring Christ's love through actionable deeds.
The Surgeon Turned Church Leader
Prior to his full-time service in the Church, President Nelson was a renowned heart surgeon. He made history in 1955 by performing the first open-heart surgery in Utah. His medical career saw him holding several prestigious positions, including President of the Society for Vascular Surgery and serving on multiple boards dedicated to cardiac health in the United States. Nelson authored numerous chapters in medical textbooks and was fluent in 11 languages, demonstrating his commitment not only to medicine but also to sharing knowledge across cultures.
As a leader, he was celebrated for his gentle spirit and remarkable humility. Those who worked alongside him, including President Dallin H. Oaks, noted his extraordinary modesty in the face of significant achievements. Oaks characterized him as “the kindest and sweetest person you could associate with,” a sentiment that resonated deeply throughout their shared experiences in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since their ordinations on the same day in 1984.
Legacy of Love and Family
President Nelson is survived by his devoted wife, Wendy, their eight children, 57 grandchildren, and more than 167 great-grandchildren, all of whom signify the strong family values he cherished. His balance of personal, professional, and spiritual commitments serves as a powerful example for countless individuals and families around the world.
In his memory, many will bask in the warmth of his genuine care and dedication to uplifting others while following the example of Jesus Christ. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of leaders and devoted followers.
