JAL Group Initiates First Lunar Transport Service: ARGO PROJECT
On May 26, 2026, the JAL Group, in partnership with ispace, officially announced the launch of the ARGO PROJECT, marking the world's first lunar transportation service by an airline.
Under a new payload transport contract signed with ispace, scheduled for the lunar landing mission in 2028, Japan Airlines (JAL) and its subsidiary JALUX aim to sell payload transport slots to both corporate and municipal clients starting May 27, 2026.
The Vision Behind ARGO PROJECT
The ARGO PROJECT, a long-term initiative aimed at ensuring the preservation of invaluable cultural artifacts and practices, derives its name from the legendary ship 'Argo' from Greek mythology. This ambitious endeavor is driven by the will to protect and relay cultural heritage to future generations. In a time when Earth faces escalating threats from climate change, natural disasters, and conflicts that put cultural identities at risk, using the lunar environment as a safe haven for these artifacts allows for more manageable preservation efforts.
By establishing a unique lunar transport box named 'Möbius Ark,' JALUX will oversee the development of this specialized box while simultaneously inviting contributions from local regions and companies. These contributions will include regional special products and reputable business items that reflect contemporary culture. The collaborative efforts will see the selected items safely launched and transported to the Moon by ispace, using a lunar lander to complete the mission.
Project Phases
The ARGO PROJECT is structured in four main phases:
1.
Box Development and Collection of Items: JALUX will lead the development of the Möbius Ark and manage the acquisition of items for transport.
2.
Rocket Launch and Transport: The items secured in the boxes will be launched into Earth orbit and subsequently transported to the Moon.
3.
Lunar Landing: The boxes will land on the lunar surface.
4.
Cultural Preservation for Future Generations: The locked boxes filled with cultural treasures will remain on the Moon until they are opened by future inhabitants.
Focus on Payload Sales
The JAL Group has set its sights on creating this new chapter in space transport, offering the opportunity for individuals and businesses alike to participate in this historic mission. Selected items will not only represent Japanese culture but also contribute to a broader narrative of humanity's journey into a new frontier. There are plans to document the deployment of the boxes with photography once they reach the lunar surface.
As this project develops, the JAL Group remains committed to utilizing over 70 years of aviation expertise to foster a new transport network that includes the Moon. By collaborating with partner firms and municipalities in this mission to preserve culture, they aim to draw the public closer to the realm of space transportation and exploration
