Kickoff Event for 'Sea Trash Zero Week 2026': Cosplay Environmental Action in Ikebukuro

'Kickoff to Sea Trash Zero Week 2026'

On May 30, 2026, the Japan Foundation and the Ministry of the Environment will host the launch event for 'Sea Trash Zero Week 2026' under the title 'Cosplay de Sea Trash Zero Action 2026' at Ikebukuro. This initiative emphasizes the critical issue of marine debris and encourages attendees, particularly cosplayers, to spread awareness through their social media channels. Since 2019, the World Cosplay Culture Promotion Association (WCCPA) has been actively engaged in community efforts to address marine litter, and this event marks the next step in that mission.

Event Highlights

The gathering promises an exciting lineup of various cosplayers who will gather in Ikebukuro to participate in a coordinated cleanup action throughout the district. Each participant is encouraged to wear items that feature the event's theme color—blue—as they clean up trash from the streets. Participants will also receive blue tote bags, drinking water, and all necessary cleaning supplies, ensuring a hassle-free experience for everyone involved.

Following the cleanup, attendees can freely engage in cosplay photography, transforming Ikebukuro into a vibrant and colorful setting alive with creativity. It’s an opportunity for participants to enjoy their love for cosplay while also contributing to a meaningful cause.

Schedule of Events

  • - Date: May 30, 2026

The kickoff ceremony serves as an official commencement of the national cleanup campaign that will continue until June 8, with activities across the country under the banner of Sea Trash Zero Week. During this time, all participating groups can receive original trash bags at no cost to facilitate their cleanup efforts.

Importance of Sea Trash Zero Week

Since its inception in 2019, Sea Trash Zero Week aims to reduce marine debris across Japan through community action. This year, participants will commemorate significant environmental dates: May 30 (Trash Zero Day), June 5 (Environment Day), and June 8 (World Ocean Day). By championing these initiatives, we can collectively foster an environment-conscious society.

Cosplay Beyond Fun: A Responsible Approach

Many cosplayers, inspired by their passion for storytelling through characters, take it upon themselves to keep their filming locations litter-free. The WCCPA collaborates with eco-conscious cosplayers to combine their love for the art form with a commitment to sustaining the environment. The distinction between cosplay and costume play is essential; while costume play often occurs during events like Halloween and may be accompanied by littering, cosplay engagements generally prioritize cleanliness and respectful conduct.

Sponsorship Opportunities

We are also reaching out for sponsors eager to join us in this exciting initiative by amplifying their brand presence during the event. Options for engagement include stage sponsorship, booth displays, and sampling opportunities, ensuring visibility for partners in support of this meaningful cause.
