Engaging Youth in Disaster Preparedness at Sunshine City
Sunshine City recently hosted its third edition of the engaging disaster preparedness program, “Exciting Disaster Preparedness Experience.” In collaboration with the Toshima Fire Department and the Toshima Ward, around 100 fourth-grade students participated, marking a memorable event designed to enhance local awareness and preparedness.
Each spring and fall, Sunshine City, along with its partners, conducts self-defense fire drills for approximately 1,000 office and commercial tenants. This program, however, offers a unique hands-on experience specifically tailored for children, designed to deepen their understanding of disaster preparedness by bridging classroom knowledge with practical experience.
During this year’s event, students practiced initial fire extinguishing using fire extinguishers, participated in evacuation drills, and engaged in smoke simulations. These activities provided a fun-filled learning environment where children could grasp essential safety skills while enjoying themselves. The excitement was palpable as the kids expressed a desire to implement the safety measures they learned at home. Many were motivated to take actions such as ensuring their electrical outlets were free of dust with their parents and checking the stability of shelves in the event of an earthquake.
“Watching the children learn about disaster preparedness in such an enjoyable way reinforces the value of our efforts,” said a representative from Sunshine City. By incorporating play elements, not only was awareness heightened, but it also fostered a sense of agency and responsibility among the students. The collaborative efforts with local government entities are gradually propelling these initiatives to resonate throughout families and the broader community.
The program is aligned with a pivotal goal of providing opportunities for children and families in the local area to contemplate and engage with disaster preparedness, expanding their learning beyond passive observance.
This year marked a significant milestone for the program with new enhancements, including lectures by disaster management officials from Sunshine City, detailing regional safety measures and the government’s approach towards disaster preparedness strategies. The engagement of the Toshima Fire Department ensured hands-on experiences such as smoke simulations and fire incident reporting exercises were effectively delivered. This comprehensive approach was well appreciated, as it allowed the children to relate their classroom learning back to potential real-life scenarios they might face.
As the program concluded, children reflected on their experiences, recognizing how important it is to be prepared for emergencies. The enthusiasm displayed by the students echoed the program’s success and the evident impact it had on raising awareness among the younger generation.
Future Initiatives at Sunshine City
The commitment to fostering disaster preparedness will continue as Sunshine City strives to work closely with residents to promote safety. More collaborative efforts with local communities and educational programs are planned to ensure children remain informed and proactive about safety measures. This initiative is a part of a larger ongoing collaboration with the Cabinet Office’s “Preparations for Disasters” project.
In contributing to constructing a safe and resilient community, Sunshine City stands firm in its dedication to offering such enrichment opportunities.
